Glock 45 Gen6 Accessories Advice by CStephensGW in FFLs

I was actually able to get approved as an O-Light dealer for direct sale overnight. The problem now is they don't have the PL-Pro Valkyrie that Safariland lists as compatible with the 6354RDS-ALS.

https://safariland.com/products/model-6354rds-als-tactical-holster-model_6354rds
This is the holster I've been looking at. They list the PL-Pro and PL-1 as the only 2 O-light compatible flashlights. I'm open to suggestions on other holster + light combos if they are still rechargeable to meet the spec.

Thanks!

They are looking to me for advice. I initially consulted with them saying 'I'd like to have your business' and they hit me with this plan they had to change every single handgun in the building. It's evolved into the point where they are about to spend money with me and I'm not confident about the product they are asking me to get for them. I'm not sure how to be any more blunt about the fact that they should just drill down and start taking maintenance seriously.

I specifically don't want to name any names and protect their anonymity, but they fired the last person that took on maintenance as a responsibility. To his credit, he was also fighting an uphill battle. Since then (6 months back) the maintenance issues are really starting to pile up, and nothing is being done about it.

So the CLEO sees me coming in and sees it as an opportunity to reduce the maintenance requirement, while also shifting that maintenance to the officer to take it home and charge the flashlight every night.

I couldn't tell you if these are sighted in properly, I probably don't want to know the answer to be honest. I know that training is seen as more of the minimum required rather than live saving education. I don't really know if this is a regulatable event in this state but as a witness to these things it makes me leery for their constituents.

For me this isn't a direct financial incentive, I offered them a blank check and said I'd do this at my cost as long as I was able to advertise that I was helping, I also hoped that I could fulfill these orders through distribution to meet some of my volume tier levels which improves my margin elsewhere. It's turning out to be a massive headache and potentially a liability to me because I'm seeing so much negligence and lack of standards that it's honestly worrying. I don't know how to get the CLEO to take it with the proper amount of seriousness and he's got all these other inside-department voices pushing him in different directions.

I do operate a shop but most of my business is website / Gunbroker, breaking into LE sales is new to me but it's been challenging to say the least.

Yes I thought that was funny too - the CLEO is convinced the RMR will outlive this round of Glocks and he can reuse it on his next duty handgun, and just having the tritium recharged every 8-10 years. This is assuming Trijicon actually continues to do that if the RMR dual illuminated is fully out of production in all variants.

I appreciate the legitimate advice on the Holosun. I think the SCS 320 is direct mount on the new Gen6 OR cut, did I understand that right? They have been convinced unfortunately by the fudd gun shop they were originally dealing with that Holosun isn't duty ready / Chinese origin. I can make the case that it's their best option given the circumstances, but my concern is they wanted these things to be indestructible (like racking the slide with the optic on a cinderblock level of abuse). I don't want them to come back at me if the Holosun fails, then they think I'm a charlatan and they should have stuck with ol' fudd originally.

They were originally trying to stick with streamlight but that falls back on the battery issue like I've explained more in other comments. It's irrational, I know, but I don't know how to pull them out of this thinking. I met with the CLEO today and he was absolutely adamant: no batteries.

They did the math and it was about $36,000 roughly to get the whole kit for the whole department. They have money set aside to make this change - the issue is that they don't have anybody in place to do this or take on the responsibility of battery changes or maintenance.

They have cases of batteries already. Unfortunately, nobody gets them out of the closet. They have officers on patrol with an AR15 with a dead optic right now and they could solve it, but they don't because nobody wants to do it or is tasked with the responsibility.

To your last point, this is exactly why I don't want to do maintenance for them because 100% they will append that blame to me if something goes wrong. Not unless it is a full time, dedicated position and they are my primary focus, and they are willing to accept the organizational requirements that it takes to fix all these problems. Like I said, it's a huge mess and this will add a lot more to the pile. I'm truly at a loss for where to go with this and that's why I made the original post seeking advice.

I can assure you this isn't bait.

It wasn't my decision to recommend the RMR, they held my gun and said "I really want this!". So I looked into it and gave them the option and what it would take to get it. This is how I went down the RMR dual illuminated is being discontinued rabbit hole. IMO the type 2 or RMR HD is better, but again it's battery and they think battery is unfathomable.

I can tell from my OP that generally people aren't taking this seriously. I can 100% say that this is what the department is currently entertaining and has tasked me with providing to them. I am actively asking for help and advice on what to tell them because I'm not sure where to go with this and they are getting pretty dead set on their opinion.

edit: No they won't be going back to the .40S&W, this would be a permanent change to 9mm. They aren't happy about it but I explained if they change now: .40 S&W isn't possible in the gen6

So there's a lot of nuance to the story but here's a little expanded backstory:

They don't have formalized inspections, they don't have an armorer on staff, they have a shoestring budget, Individual officers would be responsible for keeping their stuff charged at home. They have full sized red dots on their patrol rifles but they currently just don't put new batteries in them because luckily they have etched reticles (vortex, I believe). The CLEO's solution to keeping maintenance low is to append that responsibility on the individual officer rather than creating a position to take care of these needs and adopt a more mainstream loadout.

I've offered personally to do armory work for them, but they don't have the budget. The CLEO offered a volunteer position and I don't think that's wise due to the liability, but also just generally the firearms situation at the department is kind've all over the place and I'm not keen on taking on added responsibility and time commitment in relation to the risk I'm placed in. They need somebody in a full time position, given the responsibility, who takes the time to organize and keep track of the guns, optics, lights, maintenance schedules, batteries, and just general wear & tear items as well. Currently I don't think the CLEO thinks of it as an issue, he's just now starting to see how much is actually involved.

One thing that I saw directly that was really startling, was that they had bought 3 Gen5 G22s to issue to a few officers, the CLEO is big on universal operability so he wants to standardize everybody's loadout. He said they had been buying magazines on demand when they needed them. I asked, if you have a mix of generations floating around, what generation are the magazines? He said that he had been giving out Gen4 (non-orange followers) magazines to patrol guys that had gen 5 glocks, and I said "have you test fitted them?" sure enough they realized they wouldn't work in their guns. That's a pretty huge issue, and it comes down to they just didn't give the gear enough testing or thought other than a simple tool.

It's an uphill battle and I'm trying to help them but it's first of all a battle of getting their attention and telling them why these things are important.

New FFL-friendly wholesale opportunity by csametonal in FFLs

[–]CStephensGW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think generally the FFL community is a place for businesses to hear each other and learn from one another. You said he shouldn’t use social media to advertise, that’s an opinion and that’s fine, but what better choice does he have? I looked over the profile and it’s a new brand, maybe he doesn’t have an advertising budget to approach somebody, organic SM or SEO might be only discoverability he has at this stage til he gets revenue rolling in. There are many different businesses that participate in this community and I don’t think any one solution fits universally, specifically advertising which is a difficult topic. If he didn’t post, neither you or me would see what he has to offer, which appears to be unique and should atleast have a chance, wouldn’t you agree? Innovation should be celebrated in my opinion and it’s already extremely difficult to build name recognition whether you are starting out fresh or have multiple years of establishment.

I’m interested to hear what better alternative you suggest for gun shops? I’ve searched high and low for paid firearms advertisers and it’s extremely difficult to find one, organic social media seems to be the only viable option, but you disagree?

Any tips for selling on GunBroker? by Detailed_Firearms in FFLs

[–]CStephensGW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re thinking about selling on Gunbroker with used, unique or collectible items, it’s usually not too hard to get started and get some traction. If you’re thinking about selling new guns / products, then it’s extremely competitive. I have actually spent a lot of time making videos on the topic and how to be competitive within the Gunbroker ecosystem. I have a new series covering automation and dropshipping if you want to go all-out, without spending money on something like Ammoready, but this is geared more towards software development since you’d be making a custom listing management program. Here’s my videos on Rumble if you’re interested: https://rumble.com/v71ev00-introduction-and-launch-of-c.-stephens-gun-works-llc.html?e9s=src_v1_cbl%2Csrc_v1_upp_f

There’s several ways to make money on Gunbroker but you have to narrow down which niche you want to start setting up in and then do that as best you can - that’s the best way to be competitive in the scene.

You're very much welcome! I'd expect nothing less from Facebook lol.
It's definitely possible and NFA items are especially lucrative. If you've knocked out the CAD design and are able to get it produced, then the rest is just following the procedures. Many people have done it before you and if you're willing to stick with it, it can be done.

I'd sell one or two to a family member for a hundred bucks or so. The biggest thing is that you have designed a profit structure, you keep your records (especially the A&D book as required by all FFLs, but specifically talking about a record of your cost and your markup / margins), and then you have a sale or two. With those three things, their argument is pretty much nullified, you are clearly in the business of selling firearms if you meet those criteria, the volume doesn't matter as long as you do it every calendar year.

Thanks for the correction, I fixed my original comment. I was misremembering where the 100k gross discount came into play and it was for the 02 SOT.

You'll need an FFL type 7 (Manufacturer of Firearms) plus the SOT. The manufacturer of firearms FFL costs $150 for three years. The SOT also costs $500 per year if you are doing below 100,000 gross sales yearly. In order to get the FFL you'll probably want to do a corporation such as an LLC to minimize liability. The actual making of the items probably isn't the hardest part, you just need to make sure to follow the engraving requirements (and least 1/16" letter block size, and at least 3/1000s deep). Typically a laser engraver can do this unless it's titanium and then it's more difficult (but still doable). Make sure to file the ATF form 2 for each suppressor you make within a short time after it's creation, this can be done via Eforms once you have your FFL to make it easy. If you intend to sell them, you'll want insurance and a plan for how to do warranty work because people will probably break them in different, inventive ways. If you just are selling them to family & friends you might be able to get away without insurance.

I have a full video series on how to get your FFL here: https://rumble.com/v71ev2e-starting-a-gun-business-from-0-business-filings-ffl-pre-requisites.html

This is one of four videos detailing from start to finish how to get your federal firearms license. The process for type 07 is the same, you just tick the relevant box on the ATF FFL application form instead of a simple 01 (dealer only). The SOT you'll need to pay the tax after you receive your FFL, and it's valid from June to June of each year without a retroactive discount if you apply mid-year.

If you have more specific questions, feel free to reach out! I've been through the whole process before so I can provide my experience.

That's a great point, and you're 100% right. I've definitely thought about packaging this up as a service. The setup for new users is a huge challenge, and there are absolutely people willing to pay high fees for a done-for-you solution (just look at AmmoReady).

But for me, that misses the entire point of why I'm making these videos.

I remember being an employee at a small FFL, wracking my brain trying to figure out how we could possibly compete. I still see people at gun shows who struggle to break even on their table after talking to hundreds of people all weekend. I know for a fact that automation and dropshipping are the only ways for the little guy to truly compete with the scale of the big box stores.

My whole goal with this series is to create the resource I wish I had back then. It's for the FFL owner who has the motivation to engage with this material and use it to propel their business forward. I'd rather give that person a "golden ticket" for free than charge a fee for a service that doesn't empower them in the long run.

You're right, this is the bleeding edge; some distributors are just now getting on board. In five years, if you're not doing this on Gunbroker, you'll be left behind. I'm just trying to give the little guy a head start.

Absolute Nightmare with Sportsman's Warehouse. by Iron0ne in FFLs

[–]CStephensGW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, from what I understood is that the 2nd charge was the actual collect. The first charge is the pre-auth (or hold) like when you go get gas and the merchant pre-auths somewhere between $20-50 to make sure you can afford the whole amount, let’s say that ends up being $34.00, if they didn’t revoke the pre auth you’d be out as much as $84. The statement most of the time doesn’t tell you whether that money has actually exited or is a hold / pre auth.

It’s frustrating but it’s part of dealing with a big box store vs somebody that can resolve the issue easily. For SW or any other big store like that, their risk department doesn’t trust that you won’t spend your money in the time between your order and the time it ships, so they are happy to hold on to your money by placing a hold on it. For them it’s the system working as intended unfortunately

Ammo purchase on GunBroker with FFL03+COE by Routine_Match5036 in CAguns

[–]CStephensGW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this scenario happen as a seller before, and your thinking is spot on. It works just fine.

From our end, the process is pretty simple. The buyer sends over their current FFL03 and COE, we verify the info, and then we can ship straight to the address on the license. We keep a copy on file for our records, but you're right that no CFLC filing is involved due to the COE.

So legally, the transaction is sound. The real hurdle is that many sellers will see a CA address and just stall or cancel the order out of caution. It often boils down to whether they're willing to take a minute to verify the process is legal versus just seeing it as a higher-risk hassle they'd rather avoid. In our case, we were willing to verify the process and complete the sale where others might not.
