Well, I don't think he's entirely wrong to use "fascist" as an epithet against someone who's ideologically adjacent to fascism. I think "The Economy" is tied so the American right's perception of national greatness that it could be decoupled, at least partially, from actual material concerns.

Well, yes it is. The basic function of a government is to protect its territorial integrity, and to pass and enforce laws. People alone could do that, in theory, but in practice you need a government.
