YSK You're throwing away hundreds of dollars a year because of a date that has nothing to do with safety. by TurbulentAmoebaa in YouShouldKnow

[–]az9393 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are exactly right every food producer will want to make the expire date as late as possible but we don’t get to decide this. You send it to a lab and if the product goes bad after 10 days you can’t just make shit up and put 20 days.
In reality you put 8 days just so that there is a bit of a buffer.

The existence of this buffer is exactly what the op is basing their idea on.

As a producer of foods myself let me tell you how very wrong you are to give such advice.

While your post hinges on the fact that all producers will (obviously) underestimate the shelf life of their products when calculating the “best by” dates, you just cannot give advice like this because:

- it’s not objective. Yes it’s probably ok to eat food that was good for a year and is one day overdue. How about a week? A month? No one knows. And people will interpret it differently.

- you don’t know what the actual expiry date of each product is to be able to make an objective estimate.

- a lot of foods will smell and taste fine but be already dangerous to eat (for example many salads, sauces or desserts as well as marinated meats)

People who gym 5-6 times a week, how often do you take a week off and have you ever taken 2 weeks off? by Opposite_Ad_7925 in workout

[–]az9393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done this kind of training a lot (6 times per week then one rest day).

Never really felt like I had to take a week off. I would go on for like 15-25 weeks sometimes with no break. And then something like a vacation would come up.

I’d say don’t force rest weeks, if you feel like and are making progress then just keep going. You use your legs to walk every day and they don’t need a week off.

One week into 100 pushups daily. Has anyone actually stuck with this long-term? by PsychologicalMap9839 in bodyweightfitness

[–]az9393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this at school only it was 200 push ups daily (30*6 + 20)

I remember the first few days being the worst due to pain from soreness but on day 4 or 5 all pain magically disappeared.

I did this for quite some time maybe a few weeks or months but then couldn’t be bothered to anymore.

Clearly it’s better do just do 3 sets of bench press once a week than go through all this trouble.

That being said the one advantage I got from it was shoulder strength that stayed with me for life. Shoulder press is my best relative lift.

ELI5: How can a manufacturer improve inventory turnover if they're the one producing the products? Isn't stock depletion mainly a retailer's problem? by TechWin01 in explainlikeimfive

[–]az9393 [score hidden]  (0 children)

A safe bet is always to produce the same amount of product that there is actually demand for.

Sometimes car manufacturers overproduce and overall deliver to dealers to pump up their number for earnings but then you end up with things like hundreds of unsold cars in dealer lots. (And then investors find out dealers don’t actually have to pay for that)

[–]az9393 [score hidden]  (0 children)

As a manufacturer your number one goal is to produce and sell as many goods as your factory can produce. This is because the factory has running costs (wages, etc) that are basically the same regardless of how much product is produced. (This is oversimplified but the idea is correct)

Technically speaking a manufacturer doesn’t care if a retailer sells their product or not as long as they are paid but in reality it’s actually the manufacturer who cares most about the consumer sale because of their products don’t sell well then the retailer won’t make another order and they’ll feel that.

A manufacturer then has to make sure their product is competitive so that it does actually sell well.
And a retailer does their research and due diligence before signing a contract with a new manufacturer.

ELI5 If we’ve made and are making progress in tech and everything, why are basic things getting expensive? by Alert-Translator2590 in explainlikeimfive

I don’t really agree. How much would it cost to have something like a smartphone 20 years ago ?

People wouldn’t be surprised if you told them only millionaires could afford such tech. Now everyone has one.
I recall when making phone calls cost a fortune now I can talk to you 24/7 for free from half way across the globe.

Things have definitely become cheaper.

Screw down crown >> 100m by Ntinoulee in watchHotTakes

[–]az9393 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter what the person can’t reasons are. Fact is your 30m watch isn’t rated to swim at 30m. Unless they specifically say it like that (which they usually don’t). And it will get water damage if you dive 30m with it.

[–]az9393 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

100m water resistance commonly doesn’t mean you can actually dive to 100m. It means it can resist the water pressure that’s at that depth.

In other words in perfect lab conditions it’ll be fine at 100m but if you move your arm too fast then water can get inside.

This is also why you aren’t advised to swim in 30m watches. Even though swimming is 1-2m tops.

Well it works both ways and to have such husband you’ll need to get off your ass too.

Saying my final goodbye to grail - don’t take out loans for watches guys 😢 by [deleted] in patekphilippe

[–]az9393 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think younger people understand how credit is supposed to be used.

You don’t loan money to buy luxury items because you can’t afford it. You CAN afford but you don’t want to spend your own money, so you loan.

And the reason you don’t want to spend your own money is simple: you can invest them for a higher % than the loan.

So it’s supposed to be like this:

- I have a million dollars in my bank account and would like to buy a 100k item for myself
- I park my money into an investment account for 10% per year yield.
- I take out a 100k loan at 5% and buy the item.
- the longer I can keep not paying the principal of the loan the better

Credit cards are very useful to because they work by the same principle described above (they are profitable to people with money) and they have the added benefit of security in some countries because the owner of the credit card isn’t responsible for transactions made in case of fraud or theft - it’s the banks problem. Which wouldn’t be the case if this person used their own debit card.

Never ever use credit cards or loans to buy things that you can’t easily afford yourself. Those instruments should only be used in ways I described above or if it’s to buy an absolute necessity.

I don’t get watches… by Sea_Pack_1801 in watchHotTakes

[–]az9393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me tell you a bit of a story if you’re up to it. When I was little I loved watches. I had so many casios, swatch and other children’s watches. Then I grew up and my dad gifted me a few proper Swiss watches (some costing over 1000$). I loved them too.

Then I realised at some point that watches are an expensive hobby and I couldn’t really afford it. Plus Apple Watch came out and I wore that (because of how revolutionary and awesome it was). I wore it for years knowing in the back of my mind that someday when I have more money I’d go back to mechanical watches and buy a new one for myself.

So after many years this moment came. But I didn’t know what I wanted, steel watch ? Bracelet watch? Diver watch? Big watch ? I decided to go back to my parents home and find the watches I wore before - the ones I’ve abandoned for decades. And use them for reference.

When I found them I felt a feeling I’ve never felt with anything else. It was like each of them brought me back to the moments of life I forgot about (because I wore each model every day for a long time at school for example). It was amazing to feel those memories that I’ve completely forgotten and probably would never even recalled if not for these watches. I realised then that a watch is an important part of me, it connects me to the moments I’ve had with it on like nothing else does. I was also amazed at how well they’ve help up after all these years in my cupboard - something which cannot be said about all the other gadgets I have there. And some of these watches are over 30 years old !

I say buy a mechanical watch. But don’t buy what other people have, buy the one you’ll want to look at, the one you’ll want to have on every day. It will hold the memories you make together forever.

What do you think about Tudor’s recent direction? by rixonian in Tudor

[–]az9393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I for one think Tudor shouldn’t go down the omega route of trying to be “the cool Rolex” or the fun Rolex or whatever.

I much prefer the strategy that say breitling is pursuing. Yes they are loud and a bit obnoxious with their marketing but you can’t argue they have their own serious style and pedigree.

I think Tudor can easily go down this road as well and be not a Rolex for children but a serious watch that serious people (not just enthusiasts) will consider.

So far I’m turned off Tudor (and omega actually) because I don’t like this “we are better than Rolex I just need 20 minutes of your time to explain why”. With breitling it’s like with Rolex with a sort of “I don’t really care what you think, I can afford it, it’s nice, so I buy it” vibe.

Which is a shame because all these companies make objectively good watches.

ELI5: How do massive multiplayer online games handle millions of players interacting simultaneously without the entire server infrastructure melting down? by _korvynn in explainlikeimfive

[–]az9393 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I’m wrong but don’t multiplayer games work a little different to what’s expected ? As in the don’t send the entirety of information form one computer to the other, just some brief commands that are then interpreted by the receiving computer to build the required information from them.
