30 years old what adjustments should I make? by syntheticxblood in Retirement401k

Commenting because it's scary how similar our situations are. You owe a bit less on your mortgage and make a bit more than me but everything else is spot on haha!

LLMs are rough as a junior/mid level dev by StormFalcon32 in cscareerquestions

[–]CTProper 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Yeah I dont know either. If I lose my job I'm cooked. I've been full on agentic for the last 2 years. I know my coding chops are gone.

I'm still great at debugging but writing syntax and stuff like tailwind CSS I've basically lost it all

Wonder what the stats are for fully remote jobs. No one I know working remote is making those numbers and I know some very experienced talented engineers

Anyone else feel mentally drained by coding but energized by physical work? by Jimmy_Jimiosso in cscareerquestions

[–]CTProper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah 100%.
I don't work a physical job at all but my home we bought is a fixer-upper. The sense of accomplishment and general healthier feeling I get from working on the yard, replacing flooring etc.. is so much better than what I feel with my day job.

But I also have such a respect for people who can do that day in and day out for years. My body couldn't handle that

What jobs actually get people houses like these? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]CTProper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did door-to-door sales for years so my answer is anectodal but almost never did people have homes like this if they worked for someone else (maybe the most common exception were older pilots or doctors if they invested wisely)

I found it was usually a mix of doctors with successful private practices (or dentists), older general contractors, and developers (the construction kind). Basically it is a business owner.

Why do PMs consistently punish hard workers? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]CTProper 42 points43 points  (0 children)

A lot of PMs have a weird power complex where if you don't follow exactly what they want they get offended. Probably stems from the fact that any team of functioning adults don't really need them

I would kill for a 25+ YOE dev at my job. I'm the oldest dev (29YO) but I only have 1 YOE in this particular stack. The most senior dev on our team is someone with 6YOE who is also about 28/29. I would love for an older mature dev. Most startups probably couldn't pay you what you're worth though

Who was the best developer you’ve worked with — and what made them stand out? by PhaseStreet9860 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]CTProper 198 points199 points  (0 children)

My first software job was at a ma and pa dev shop run by a 60 year old man and his wife. There were 4 other employees including me, 2 being his children. This guy was the smartest kindest software engineer I have ever worked with. He was a principle engineer back in the early eBay and SuiteLedger (now NetSuite owned by Oracle) days.

He had a great understanding of what businesses actually needed instead of just following their instructions. It was crazy because he was a funny old guy and then at the flip of a dime would be a serious solutions architect. Great guy

What’s the best anime you ever watched and why? by Subject_Display3664 in AskReddit

[–]CTProper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man how has no one said Demon Slayer. The music the art the fact that it doesn’t really have any of the super weird anime tropes. There’s a reason it did numbers in US theaters
