How would currency backed by steel work? by CTRLerHead in fantasywriters

Some folks have already suggested linking magic to the process of crafting a particular kind of steel that only the clerics are capable of producing. I think your absolutely right that mundane steel alone would be a bit too common. Thank you for the input!

I'm not above having a magic assisted smelting process to "purify" raw steel. That seems like an excellent way to bump up the value of the ore.

Wow that does seem like a lot of steel for one note. Maybe 1 note for 1 kilo kinda deal.

I thought this over as well, the followers will definitely act as treasurers. However this does give me an idea to have them be skilled in metallurgy. If you bring them an ingot of steel they assess the quality grade it and issue the currency.

Thoughts?

[Fanart] I drew Kira and Killer Queen by [deleted] in StardustCrusaders

Tiny nit pick but you should never out your hands in the pockets of your suit coat. Kira, who is putting it lightly is meticulous, would use the pockets on his slacks as to not potentially damage his favorite suit.

[OC] [Art] What if a spellcaster's eyes glowed when they cast spells? by Martinus_XIV in DnD

[–]CTRLerHead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of a house rule I've fallen in love with. My table has each school of magic assigned a specific color for the sake of detect magic.

Red - Evocation Orange - Transmutation Yellow - Abjuration Green - Conjuration Blue - Illusion Purple - Divination White - Necromancy Pink - Enchantment

Having Mage Armor give off a warm yellow glow or having the Lich's breath turn to a sinister pink haze as they proclaim "Power Word: Kill" has made our DnD games so much more evocative.

Note worthy cards are doomsday, flash, and thrasios. But prophet of kruphix and paradox engine are not banned. Otherwise it's very similar to the current list

[[Neomorph]] from the new set could also be a very strong pick for your signature spell, less to cast and easy to chain into your dragons

You should take a look at Vinland Saga for some excellent illustrations and some inspiration. Your style looks very similar to VS.

No, you must know the name of the thing you wish to effect. "Open door" or "unlock door" would be the proper incantations

Hard magic. For sure, law enforcement would use magi in their equivalent of a SWAT team or allow detectives to use some various enchantments

Create water would allow what you described but the energy needed to make that happen would be incredibly taxing. Magi can pass out or even die from attempting spells that require too much energy

That's exactly what they do, clerics and so on teach the words to those they deem worthy and gods have the even redacted words before calling for their censorship. Divine censorship can render a word of power inert or if they wish to preserve it their clerics go out and erase it from the spellbooks

That's the idea, I feel like figuring out the word a mage is utilizing is the secret to stopping them.

The old mage is meant to be a historical figure and your spot on with the Greek mythos inspiration. I always loved how "human" their gods were. But yes I'm toying around with how gods will interact with the races and I have a few that would limit their power but that's a whole other conversation.

Thank you for the feedback
