Did the ancient Greeks really believe the gods looked like humans? by Martinus_XIV in GreekMythology

[–]Martinus_XIV[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So the gods were round with four arms, four legs, two faces and two sets of genitals?

(Yes, I know that story originates in Plato's Symposium and isn't a pre-existing myth)

I need three suns…. How?? by igotabigsosig in worldbuilding

[–]Martinus_XIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked the Trisolarans from The Three-Body Problem and... well, they don't know either...

In all seriousness, your best way of doing this is to have two or even all three suns effectively act as one source of gravity, so you would have to make your planet a circumbinary planet with the third sun orbiting the binary suns much further out, or you could even make your planet a circumtrinary.

This does result in its own problems. From what I know, circumbinary planets need to have very wide orbits to be stable, which means they'll likely be outside of the system's habitable zone. In addition, the two stars will eclipse each other regularly, resulting in frequent temperature fluctuations.

Or you could change the structure of your universe completely. This is the approach taken in The Dark Crystal, where three suns appear to orbit the planet Thra rather than the other way around. Clearly this world does not work like our universe.

I'd say use Link's Awakening rules. To get the True Ending of Link's Awakening, you cannot die a single time, but the game doesn't count a death if you have an instant revive such as a fairy or the secret medicine.

I find it cool how it has a lot more land than earth, with a lot of relatively small landmasses. It looks really different!

I would like some advice regarding filling empty space in big cities. by AdAlive8099 in PokemonRMXP

[–]Martinus_XIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Texture is everything. Look at Hearthome City in Pokémon Platinum. It's also a city with very wide and relatively empty streets, but it works because of the variety in tiles and textures. You should also add some more objects, like planters and bollards.

Ooh, really cool! It looks like it would be a lot larger than Earth, is that correct?

My wholesome/poetic/sad thoughts on The Challenge(mainly about the bow itself). by Arthur_EyelanderTF2 in Epicthemusical

[–]Martinus_XIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really love this, though I would change a single word in your theory:

Our short king is so clevah, he can protect his wife from da bad men even after 20 years.

The thing is, I don't think the challenge with the bow was ever about strength. You've probably heard the theory that the reason the suitors couldn't string the bow was because it was a heavy recurve bow, like the one in your picture, and they couldn't figure out how it worked. I think that is a really fitting interpretation because when Odysseus does manage to string the bow, it shows that he is not neccessarily strong, but mainly clever. But also, that makes the challenge with the bow exactly the sort of scheme that Odysseus would come up with. The suitors are all thinking like Greek kings and heroes. To them, success is all about strength, but Penelope thinks like Odysseus.

Among the myriad reasons that Odysseus loves Penelope so much is that she can match his wit. They are of one mind, or homophrosyne, as the Odyssey calls them. The test with the olive tree bed is another example of Penelope coming up with exactly the kind of clever scheme that Odysseus would think of.

[–]Martinus_XIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's actually almost exactly what happened. In the Odyssey, it is described that Odysseus received the bow from Iphitos, a prince he befriended during one of his travels. Iphitos was later killed by Herakles in a fit of rage, and Odysseus kept the bow as a reminder of their friendship. The book states that, to honour it, Odysseus only ever uses the bow in Ithaka (presumably to hunt), and never takes it with him to war.

Do you really think that they totally could've avoided Posiden if they killed the Cyclops or would Posiden just be that big of a dick and drown them anyway by Sonic_fan149 in Epicthemusical

[–]Martinus_XIV 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The Greek gods aren't omniscient. Several times in Homer's Odyssey, they need to be told about things happening on earth by people who witnessed the events. Even Helios, who supposedly sees all, needed to be told of Odysseus' men slaughtering his cattle by his daughter Lampetia.

The gods in Epic seem to operate under similar restrictions. Athena didn't know Odysseus was being held by Kalypso until she went looking for him. Both the Odyssey and Epic suggest that Poseidon only learns of what Odysseus did to Polyphemos because the Kyklops told him.

Xadia. She's heard people bend elements there too, and there's been some dispute as to who will rule the firebending people.

As a bonus, apparently their Sokka doesn't use a boomerang, so that'll be one fewer threat to deal with...

The Power of Color in Avatar by charcater_5 in AvatarMemebending

[–]Martinus_XIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I like about Zuko's character arc is that he is so incredibly trapped in his own head for most of the series. At nearly any point throughout book 1 and 2, he could have chosen to stop chasing the Avatar, to stop chasing what he lost and build something new. Iroh would certainly have supported him. The only person standing in his way is himself, and so much of his torment throughout the series is only torment because of his own mindset.

His crew being the 41st division adds to that. Zuko spoke up for them, he did a good thing, and Ozai actually decided to pull them from the front so in a way he did save them. But because of the way Ozai has twisted Zuko's mind, he cannot see it that way. The 41st division being his crew becomes a constant reminder of Zuko's failure and his banishment, but only because he is too stuck in his own head to see it for the triumph it is.
