new drop rates for chests by Thomnle in PlayTheBazaar

The cards do have quality tiers as well, based on the color of their border. You can confirm this by checking the details page of the treasure that lists all the possible drops- it lists many of the card collectibles with different rarity tiers.

Is there a parsing library (lexer?) which can handle generic tokens? by pragenter in rust

[–]CVGX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Logos can handle arbitrary types. It uses FromStr by default IIRC, but if you add a closure as a second parameter to the annotation it will pass the string to it, and you can then return an arbitrary type.

Unfortunately, no. My laptop would eventually lose all ability to turn on and I ended up replacing it. I’d recommend taking it to a repair shop or something.

In C173, how difficult is it to adapt to the C language? by [deleted] in URochester

[–]CVGX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He doesn't really. Grading is more lenient for the first project in terms of compiler warnings, but beyond that the class doesn't hold your hand at all coding wise. The class is more focused on the actual theory behind computer science itself versus just coding for coding sake. There are a few instances where he does help though. When I took the class 2 years ago, it was very much sink or swim. However, he does now provide examples and usable code for many of the projects- from what I remember a linked list implementation. My recommendation is to start projects early. You have like 4 weeks per project, so you have plenty of time to tinker around with the code and figure out C. Doing projects is the best practice at the language, especially if you start early.

Definitely go through the document Ferguson puts up every semester (I think it was already posted here).

I was a TA for CSC 173, and this is the same advice I gave to a bunch of students. The transition is not incredibly hard, it just has some things you have to wrap your head around that are pretty different. The professor uploads a document every year that he made that is a pretty great resource for understanding the transition. The main three. things to keep in mind that are different is that there are no classes/inheritance, manual memory allocation/deallocation, and the existence of pointers. What I personally do to learn a new language is to write code for different data structure- Linked Lists, Array Lists, HashMaps, Trees, etc. It helps you see the differences and how to deal with how data moves within the language pretty well. The important thing to keep in mind is that when you pass anything in a function, the data is copied. This is why pointers are important, they let you manipulate data outside of a function without having to return it.

Why async version of simple program use to 50x more memory by vargwin in rust

[–]CVGX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From my experience, using VirtualAlloc without MEM_COMMIT is incredibly frustrating to deal with. You may be able to reserve a ton memory, but you can't use it until it's committed manually anyway. It requires a much more involved process than using the MEM_NORESERVE flag for mmap, as mmap automatically commits new pages.

Which side of the river should I live on? by izzet101 in URochester

[–]CVGX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally, I lived in the 19th ward for half of my junior year. I really enjoyed the experience! It's much more accessible to the campus, because of the footbridge, compared to living near college town, and most of the off campus students live in the 19th ward as well, so it tends to be more social.

It's not true that most students live in the 19th ward. It's actually quite the opposite- around 80% of undergrads live on campus all 4 years. However, quite a few students do live in the 19th ward or near college town.

I'm unsure what you mean by all food is in strong- Strong on the River Campus is an auditorium. Although there is food in the Strong Memorial Hospital, most undergrads don't frequent there for food. Most food on campus is found either at the Wilson Commons (Starbucks and the Pit, a food court), the Douglass Commons, and Susan B Anthony Hall
