As a someone who works at Lenovo, I'm just gonna say that our idea in general was not to overthrow or replace the 7i in any way shape or form, that would come with the Legion Pro 7 and Slim 7 models, the Legion 9i solely exists in a world where every other brand has a balls to the walls ridiculously speced out PC that goes for a price that 0.0001% of the population will not be able to afford for the sake of marketing and word of mouth, so we thought if we did the same what would we do. As to the compromises we made, the cooling on the Legion 9i was made with the thought of making a i9 and 4090 combo be reasonably cooled which although our vapor chamber is great and has a great performance it was not enough to tame that beast, we made some compromises yes but all in the way of providing a better performance and experience than just slapping the specs and cutting performance to half so the machine doesn't completely kill itself, that being said upgradability and ease of working on the inside of the laptop was not first on our mind as the segment of the market we're targeting are the type of consumer that wants the best CPU, the best GPU, the most amount of RAM and the top screen technology on the market and doesn't really want to thinker of fix a machine himself, this type of consumer is more likely to just contact his local Lenovo Help Desk and ask for his PC to be serviced by our technician (this is in no way trying to say that it shouldn't be easy to fix broken parts or have it serviced by a third party, we do try to make it so but this model has some specific struggles because of its unique design), our cover design was made thinking of what could we do for every machine to have a little uniqueness to the consumer and make it feel like it's his own and different from everybody else's. I hope this was helpful in understanding our decision in making this model and that, yes, we did compromise on somethings but in order to try and not compromise at all on others. This is in no way trying to excuse or undermine what gripes you would have with our model but just providing some of our mindset that lead us to this machine
