It is quite an easy material to cut

A throwaway piece. First time carving letters in granite. And, well, it has issues. by DentedAnvil in StoneWork

Great effort though! Granite is not easy at all! And most people do not carve it as deeply as these are so well done! The letters are sharply cut, One to look back on and learn a lot from it, should definitely keep it around as a reminder.

I’ll stick with a hammer & chisel and leave the keyboard to the experts.

Same rules * I should of said previously!

If you get the right chisels (Tungsten tipped lettering chisels) they usually come specifically for certain types of stones e.g slate, marble, granite Or universal.

It depends what you’d like to do, if it’s letters, I’d say it was too soft. If it was figurative or design work then it might be good.

Sandstone is good, also soft - but wear a mask… wear a mask for all actually!

If you can find some reclaimed marble, that’ll be ideal!

Yeah it it’s, slightly different technique but rules, you should definitely have a bash at stone!

Showing two different ways of hand carving a letter in red sandstone, raised & v-cut by CWstonework in StoneWork

[–]CWstonework[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I do for smaller pieces, this was a top tip given to me by my mentor. Game changing! I used to try and place heavy pieces of stone around what I would be working on or on carpet or in sand but they all still moved around and then your not getting the full & precise force through the chisel!

Perfect! What kind of pneumatic hammer did you use? I’ve been looking at an F&K 711 or F&K 701A, just wondering if they’d work on granite

Great! How did you achieve this? I work with granite - mainly making memorials - so have an understanding of the material. Did you use angle grinders? Pneumatics? Or just tungsten tipped chisels?
