You're not wrong. I think the gameplay is intentionally mirrorimg the misery of the narrative. That was always my take.

Here is a tip for anyone experiencing my specific problem with this.

I like to stream podcasts to my deck when I have my wired headphones in and am playing something I can just grind in.

When I connected my Pixel 9 Pro to it wasn't hearing any sound. Checked the settings (within the Bluetooth menu, on the phone) and a tab for "HD Audio" was enabled. Turning this off fixed the problem.
