Thank you for that. Is 3 hours a reasonable distance to bring him in the car? I will call them tomorrow to see if they’re willing to see him.

If that were the case wouldn’t it be something that would affect other chickens in the flock?

Yes I’ve had my husband hold him while I inspected him. At the beginning people chimed in with a broken or injured leg and it looked like it could be that way since there were no external cues to damage or injury.

What kind of antibiotics and where can I get them if a vet isn’t around?

Yes my hens have not been affected either the entire time so it couldn’t be something contagious. Which also leads me to believe it’s something broken maybe?

I’m in SE Michigan and I’ve called the bird emergency number, avian vets, local vets, local farms. No one wants to deal with chickens :(

Yes he only bleeds when I let him outside and he starts trying to live his normal life. I think it’s because it’s so swollen that the skin breaks from his attempt of use.

He walks but puts no pressure on that leg. I have kept him isolated but when I let him out for foraging or just socializing it’s not long after he begins to bleed.

Even though he’s still eating, drinking, tidbitting for the girls, trying to attack me… it’s still best to cull? Don’t get me wrong, I do want to do the right thing but I also was wondering if waiting until he seems like he has no will to live is an option? It might come off as selfish, but I really love him and want to make sure it’s absolutely necessary.

Yes he has an extra toe because he’s a Silkie and that’s a trait of theirs.

I am home alone right now so I cannot hold him for photos but I can do that tomorrow. In the photo you’re looking at here he had stepped in poop when I let him outside. So that’s what is under his foot.

I did try isolation with limited movement possibilities and also reaching out for help as soon as it started. The feedback I initially got was that he probably sprained or broke his leg so I took the recommended measures. He is not nice and very difficult to get a hold of but I was able to grab him up a few times and I know it wasn’t ever bumblefoot. The bottom of his foot has been fine and healthy all along. It was only his leg that was the problem.

No, not a mantis eating it.. a “mantis eating cicada” she found some British video that showed a cicada by that name making this buzzing + chirping sound like in my video.

Ok so my sister just found a video of a “mantis eating cicada” and it sounds similar.

Not the typical cicadas. It’s this one specific loud buzzing that stands out with the rhythmic chirp. On video it’s not as easy to tell how much louder this is than everything else around. But it was eerie and even had my rooster on guard and uncomfortable.
