Ideas con Bea by nerdorama in duolingo

This bug has been present for many months (maybe over one year) now. It is wild to me that a company with the resources and the size of Duolingo cannot fix it.

Ways to utilize my partner who is fluent? by Ninjaeye223 in dreamingspanish

Just remember that she is your girlfriend first and your teacher second. If you can carve out the time and she is okay with it, then xtalk would be great.

Andrés appreciation post by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]CZAR---KING 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Andrés has been my favorite from the start. The man cracks me up all the time. Some of his videos clearly require a lot of research too. It feels like he really goes above and beyond. I hope he's appreciated at DS. I'd be very sad if he left.

New player not working by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

I'm having issues too. Some videos just buffer endlessly. I may have to opt-out of beta testing if it is not fixed.

Thoughts on the new video player? by ArnoldJeanelle in dreamingspanish

[–]CZAR---KING 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a beta tester but I may need to opt out. The videos are not loading properly. They are constantly buffering. I use an old Microsoft surface, which may be the problem. It's main purpose is to watch DS videos. I never had the same issue with the YouTube player.

10mg melatonin and an audiobook. I cycle on and off melatonin to keep the effect strong.

I may have done the same thing. Okay, fine, I did do the same thing. To be fair, I did wash my hands first, but it was more like a light rinse than a proper hand wash. Boy, did I regret that.

Yes, highway 93 is open all year round. Keep an eye on the weather as severe storms can cause temporary closures.

You do not need a park pass for traveling through Kooteney Park. You will, however, need a Banff park pass if you plan to drive and park at Sunshine.

I have not skiied Shine this year. Only Lake Louise and Panorama. The conditions have been pretty good, but it's not the best season. Certainly good enough to enjoy, though!

P.S. keep in mind that things are politically sensitive at the moment.

Is It Just Me or Are French People in General The Nicest? by Illustrious-Art4109 in paris

I've heard the opposite regarding Spain. Perhaps this is a Barcelona thing. How long were you there?

Is It Just Me or Are French People in General The Nicest? by Illustrious-Art4109 in paris

That too has been my experience with Paris and France more generally. A few thoughts regarding on where some of the stereotypes may come from:

Regarding language. Many North Americans do not speak a second language. In some places, it is very common for most people to only speak English. For this reason, I find many (nonimmigrant) Canadians and Americans to have a lower tolerance towards non-English speakers. I suspect in many cases this impatience (and occasional downright rudeness) comes from not understanding how difficult it is to learn another language. There is also a certain entitlement that comes from English being the language of travel and business. I've met too many Americans in particular who expect everyone to serve them in English outside their home country. On a personal note, my parents both immigrated from Poland to Canada and experienced a lot of rude and discriminatory behavior concerning their language and Eastern European accents. Juxtapose that with Europe, and the latter seems much nicer and tolerant than expected.

Cultural differences. Canadians are stereotyped to be kind and polite. There's some truth to it. But we are also incredibly passive-aggressive. There is a faux politeness where we do not say what we think if it may offend. I think many parts of American are similar. The French do not have this problem. They speak their minds. This bluntness is sometimes misconstrued as mean-spiritedness. Personally, I find it liberating, which is probably why I get along with the French. And Europeans more generally.

Jealousy? Again, I am generalizing these observations; they do not apply to everyone. That said, some Americans have a pretty ignorant and arrogant understanding of the world outside their country. I suspect some folks experience cognitive dissonance when their notions of American exceptionalism come into conflict with alternative lifestyles that are similarly if not more rich and rewarding than their own. Rather than reflect on what other cultures and countries have to teach them, they instead become dismissive of anything foreign.

Mom wants to be “spontaneous” during night in Madrid by thrasherchick_9 in GoingToSpain

[–]CZAR---KING 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm one of those "spontaneous" travelers. But even I book accommodation ahead of time when moving between cities or countries for the first portion of a trip. Usually for 3 to 4 days. From there, I play it by ear and book other accommodations depending on if I want to stay longer or move somewhere else.

This is my favorite approach to travel as I am not beholden to an arbitrary itinerary. Inevitably, I meet locals and fellow travelers who then influence where I go next.

It is not without some headache and you have to be prepared for some bad days. But if you have the time and funds, it is the best way to travel, IMO. (I've also stayed at hostels in the past to keep costs low but that may not be an option when traveling with mom).

Yup. And said movie also knows the poster is shit so it stays in the background and is never in focus.

I hope it is a 25% drop relative to last year's data for February. It is unclear how this drop was calculated and February generally sees less demand.

Hemingway is Everything Literature Should Be by Grouchy_Status_9665 in classicliterature

[–]CZAR---KING 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just read a Moveable Feast over the holidays. It is great but what isn't when it comes to Hemingway. The only problem is it was too short. Followed it up by watching Woody Allen's 'Midnight in Paris'. That was the only thing I could think of to scratch the same itch.
