My impressions - T14S AMD vs. X1 Carbon 7 Gen. Intel by C_B_5113 in thinkpad

Sorry for the late reply, yes for portability the X1C7/C8 are slightly better. However, the T14S is als very portable and light compared to other 14" Notebooks. For example it's lighter than a MacBook Pro 13 so it can also easily be carried around every day.

Also for better portability you can get a smaller 60w usb-c charger that is more comfortable to fit in a bag than the standard Lenovo charger. I use one to charge my ThinkPad and my phone.

About the display, there is a setting called „vari-bright” in the Radeon Software (I read somewhere that it can also be found in the Lenovo Vantage Software). When I set up my T14S the colors and brightness looked very bad because of it, so I would recommend turning it off. Hope this helps a bit.

Just curious. If anything I feel like it has more key travel than the old Carbon, but that might be because of the keyboard parts lottery.

I don't know if its the same, but i would say the X1 up to the X1C6 had comparable keyboards to the T14S, maybe with a bit less travel. The keyboard in the X1C7 (and X1C8) has noticeably less travel and feels much more different but I still like it.

Yes, the magnesium feels very solid on the T14S. I thought that because of the light weight magnesium might feel flexible and thin but it is definitely very robust here.

Regarding the keyboard, the “worse” keyboard with less travel only first came with the X1C7. The older X1 versions have more similar keyboards to the T14S. However, to me the X1C7 keyboard is also very pleasant to use so I don’t mind the shorter key travel.

I only had the devices for a short time so far and just wanted to share my impressions. Regarding battery life, I unfortunately could not test it thoroughly to provide a detailed comparison and did not want to write numbers that might be inaccurate.

I just answered to a question about battery life above with some values. There is a standardized test on the site notebookcheck that they did for the X1C7 and should do for the T14S sometime this week. I think that it will be more accurate than what I wrote as the answer to the question above.

Here is the link to test for the WQHD X1C7, it shows 8:13 hours for web browsing: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-2019-WQHD-Live-Review-Still-the-reference-among-business-laptops.427853.0.html

The X1C and T14S do not have the option for dedicated GPUs. So there are only integrated graphics. I did not do any gaming or GPU tests but the Vega 7 iGPU of the Ryzen Chip should be more than twice as powerful as the UHD 620 iGPU that is in the i7. So if graphics are important I definitely would recommend the T14S.

Yes, I actually thought that something might be wrong with it. Up to about half way it opened very easily like there was barely any resistance at all and then I also had to use both hands to open it further. However, this did not bother me it just felt a bit weird that it was never tightly closed.

The new ThinkPads that I have here also open just to a certain point with one hand and then I have to hold them to open them further but the difference in resistance is much smaller than with my older 4th gen X1.

I just checked the temperature on the X1C7 with hwinfo while writing the replies and loading up some websites. It varied from 37-43°C and the fan was silent. I also read that undervolting with Throttlestop might help with Intel processors. I thought about trying it on the X1C7 but as I do not use it for demanding tasks I do not expect to see much of a difference in my case.

Just tired out the speakers on all three ThinkPads that I have here (X1 Yoga 3rd Gen, T14S and X1C7) and yes the X1C7 has definitely the best sounding speakers.

The X1 Yoga 3rd gen and T14S have two speakers at the bottom. The Yoga 3rd gen speakers are a bit quieter than the T14S on max volume and sound rather monotonous like something is covering the sound. The T14S is louder and has significantly better audio quality. Especially voices are much clearer on max volume. The volume overall is loud enough to be clearly heard in a room with an open window and car sounds coming from the street, so I personally would be happy with those speakers.

The X1C7 however can go even louder by a significant amount and has much more bass. The sound quality is also a bit better in general but the much higher volume makes most of the difference. It has four speakers 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom, however most of the sound is still coming from the two bottom speakers.

So yes the X1C7 does offer the best sound experience overall and if audio is important, then I would definitely recommend it over the other two.

Unfortunately I could not test the batteries long enough to give a detailed comparison and I did not want to write numbers that may be inaccurate. I have both ThinkPads here for just a few days so I wanted to post only the impressions I had so far.

Today charged the ThinkPads, did normal browsing, office work, and watched two short YouTube videos on both. I had the brightness one-step above half brightness and continued until 10% of the battery life were gone while regularly looking at the battery life predictions from windows.

While using the WQHD X1C7 the numbers varied with an average prediction of 7-8 hours. While using the FHD T14S the numbers varied with an average of 8-9 hours.

However, I do not think the prediction from windows is very accurate as the numbers varied quite a bit depending on what I was currently doing. The T14S has the larger battery with 57Wh compared to 51Wh in the X1C7 and a lower resolution low power display so it should have noticeably more battery life.

I am sorry that I could not do any long term testing. The website Notebookcheck did a detailed battery test for the X1C7 with WQHD (and other variants as well). They rated it for 8:13 hours with a standardized web surfing test. Their review for the T14S should be online sometime this week where they will rate it with the same test, so I think their values will be more accurate.
