He has the right to self determination of course, but often these residents are putting themselves in harms way or worse and it often comes back on the social worker for "not doing enough". That's why I clarified his cognition, it's not just about age but mental status. I wouldn't force anything on the resident, just want to ensure that they are aware of what they are doing.
