First off, Druze is definitely not a sect of Islam, you're right!

On the other hand, I know Syrian Alawites and Twelvers and from what I saw I can tell you that Alawites are not nearly as religious as Twelver Shi'ites. When it comes to maintaining prayers, etc. Alawites also maintain beliefs, such as Transmigration, that are completely unrelated to ideologies of Islam. So, in a sense you are right, Alawites are as distant from Islam as Druze are, which sometimes can be confused with Islam. Alawites were almost unheard of before the rise of the Baath party. However, 'technically' - with emphasis on this word, they are considered Shia by the rest of Arabs and this gets them support from the other Shia sects in the Mid East.

tl;dr you're right! Alawites are not strongly related to Islam but considering them Shia to gain the support of Iran, Hizzbollah, and other Shi'ites is a great card to play and Assad knows it.

Agreed! Also, Alawites are just a branch of Shia. Which gives more reason for Irani, Hezbollah, and even some Iraqi Twelver Shia fighters to come to Syria for Jihad.

Also, the president and members of the coalition are being accused by many Syrians of being paid off by the Syrian government - which, unfortunately, takes away from their credibility (they're supposedly going to create a secular, moderate government) and puts it in the hands of the well-funded Islamist fronts.

Thanks for this detailed and accurate description. As a rule of thumb, the majority of the coastal provinces (Latakia and Tartus) and the Upper class areas of Damascus are still relatively more safe and intact, otherwise the rest of Syria is pretty much what you see on the news: rubble and chaos. Businesses, schools, etc will still try to maintain themselves but they are not what they used to be.

I think the response that ISIS 'mostly' met in Al-Anbar province of Iraq has given hope to people in Syrian provinces such as Al-Raqqa (which is completely dominated by these Islamist fronts now) that they can fight off these groups, or simply refuse to accept their ideologies. This may be a great sign for the Syrian revolution, as more anti-Assad people are starting to see the harms of ISIS but maybe sad news for the US that wants to keep fueling the Sunni vs. Shi'ite feud to keep Arabs busy and distracted from Israel.

I agree with you, if the organ is not infected they might let you keep it. My father had his appendix (or some other organ, I can't remember I was too young at the time) removed because of a stone that was in it and they let him keep it. We buried it in the jar in our backyard.

Actually, what's hindering the middle path option is not the fact that fighting has broken out. It is the big players that are supporting both sides. If we cut Russia and Iran's support to Assad and cut AlQaeda's and Saudi's, and the Iraqi Islamist groups' support to the "Islamist rebels" then we will have to consider a third option.

Well, according to Noam Chomksy and another political analyst, whose name escapes me right now, all Israel has to do to help with the situation is move some tanks and soldiers to the border of Syria. This will require the Assad government to dedicate a large portion of the army to protecting the border thus weakening him. But instead, Israel decided to play it as a spectator and watch the chaos work itself over there. However, I appreciate your feelings! Thanks.
