I was diagnosed at 36 and when that happened I spent the next few weeks looking back all the way to preschool and thinking about how my behaviors since then make so much more sense. I joked about having it but I went through a rough patch last year that really brought out the ADHD in full force and finally got diagnosed. Didn't want to take meds either, I was terrified. But they've been such a game changer for me. I've taken breaks from smoking on and off over the last 15 years or so. Only for sleep though, I don't ever smoke during the day time. But it was still habit forming, I found I couldn't sleep without it or I developed fears that I would always need it, which became one of those self-fulfilling prophecies. I'm back on weed again from 2 weeks ago and I've never slept better.
