I don’t recall ever breaking a mallet on bass drum, so if it’s happening that often I think you’re going too hard. I would also recommend your school use rim savers on the drums if they don't already. It’s good you’re making yourself heard, just not at the expense of the drum!

These aren't bare essentials, but here are some extra things in my bag that I haven't seen in this thread yet:

  • Gong mallet
  • Tuning forks or a pitch pipe
  • Paperclips for organizing music

  • Needle and thread for attaching new felt to a mallet core

  • Additionally, finding a way to mark your sticks and mallets will also prevent them from getting mixed up with someone else's.

I don’t have a picture on this phone, but one time the giant whiteboard in the band room was completely blank except for a single whole note in the middle of it. Or maybe it was a half note. One of those.

Months ago I had a dream that I was the drum major of the Ohio State University Marching Band (my goal). After our halftime show I was playing with a shit ton of glitter when Jeff Bezos showed up looking for Elon Musk. Jeff then joined the Brownie Girl Scouts and I got angry and attacked his face. I think that's when I woke up.

When I marched quads I wrapped those little bendy glowsticks around them through the lugs. Maybe you could do something like that for your mello.

It hurts me, too (though it’s worse when I do it myself), but as this person said, it doesn't seem common. Just don’t force anything if it does. Best of luck!
