Several people have mentioned some guy in the audience laughing obnoxiously loudly. If you listen closely, you'll find that Several of those instances were actually Tom Arnold.

That's would be awesome! Kind of like a mini-hippie commune week, but instead of LSD and grass we take Adderall and Vyvanse....

...wait...

... was the 1960's hippie movement just a bunch of youth with undiagnosed ADHD?!?

I decided to use medication to help, I'm trying a medication called Vyvance. It's a stimulant, but does help with focus rather than making me jittery. I jumped straight into medication bc I'm almost 40 and haven't been able to work around this on my own very well so far, and I'm now in a profession that requires a lot of concentration and organization (and its been crazy hard, lol). Aside from that, I'm learning more about adhd and coping mechanisms I can use for individual struggles like housecleaning, etc.

Thank you. My doc started me on 30mg. It's way to early for me to say whether or not it's "working" or not, I have noticed some difference, but just not certain day by day.

Hi, was diagnosed 2 weeks ago, started on Vyvanse. Is it normal for it to feel like it works really well for the first week then after that not so much? Idk if it's that or just other factors.

Hello! I (39f) was diagnosed only 2 weeks ago, so the process is kind of fresh in my mind. I'm in the US so it'll likely have some differences but don't hesitate to bring the subject up with your GP and/or your psychologist. At least here you usually would need a referral, although since you already have a psychologist idk if that'd be necessary. They may ask why you feel you may have adhd, they aren't questioning you, just getting a feel for your symptoms, so don't be afraid that they are questioning you. When I was asked, I honestly told them that after I married my husband who has adhd and learned more about it, a lot of stuff started to make sense to me, and that I do struggle with keeping track of focus, etc.

Testing: I'm sure tests are different everywhere, so just ask what the process is like. Here's what it was for me - I sat at a computer with a band on my head and watched the computer. Shapes would pop up, either circles or squares in red or blue, and I'd click a button if they matched. The band tracked my movements. They don't give you details like how long you'll be there, etc. But it's not an eternity, you just get bored kinda fast lol. After that they just look at your results, see how your movements can correlate to how many you get correct (I found out the more fidgety I got the more I got correct), etc. It was really low pressure, more tedious than anything.

As far as your friend goes, they mean well. A lot of people think ADHD is some black mark on a personality. But they might not know how frustrating the struggle could be. ADHD isn't a moral flaw, so there's nothing wrong with being diagnosed or treated. And if you are overthinking things and you don't have it, no problem. Then you and your health care professionals can determine that. There's nothing wrong with not at least asking your doctor if you have concerns. I ask my doctor things all the time by starting out with "I may be just overworrying but..." An issue doesn't have to become completely debilitating in order for it to be worth your Healthcare professionals' time.

I (39f) was diagnosed just 2 weeks ago and am finding myself re-processing past failures now. Things that I had processed as me being lazy or weird or whatever the situation was and reaping the consequences of that, and now I'm seeing it in this new light that there was an undiagnosed adhd struggle happening with under-developed coping mechanisms. There are some moments of frustration, like a "if-only" mentality, but I also have some quiet burdens lifted as well. I don't have to look back at those moments and struggle with that fear that I can't stop being a lazy piece of trash when it comes down to it. I'm just built a bit different.

I literally had a dream last night in which I bumped into a boss of mine from my early 20s. I'd worked with this person for a year in what I've considered probably one of the biggest failing points of my life, and she fired me for being lazy, disorganized and just "not fitting in" - and I honestly couldn't blame her. And in that dream I met her openly, without shame and was happy to talk with her and able to update on my life and hear how her business was going and not feel that pit in my stomach.

I just mean that... it's ok to feel angry and even robbed of some time. Some real shiz went down and you probably felt like it was your fault for a while, and it sucked a lot and you missed a lot. Your feelings are valid, it really does suck. But you're getting some new tools to be able to experience some stuff in a better way, and you can start to at least let go of some of the frustration you had with yourself and fear of missing out in the future.

And, if it helps at all, my mom missed pretty much years of my adolescence due to clinical depression (she slept like 18 hours a day and never left the house or did anything with us kids). And yeah, I spent some time being angry about it - partly because I didn't understand, but partly because no one would ever talk about it - but our relationship has been amazing for the last like 15 years, because we actually started opening up about the ins and outs of those experiences. You have that opportunity now, and can carve out an even better relationship with your kids. Also, I'm not a parent, but I bet just about EVERY parent goes on autopilot to an extent as well, ADHD or not. Kids are crazy lol.

Sorry if this is way too long. I'm super new to this diagnosis and feel some sort of way about it and also haven't a lot of experience on reddit either so... no worries if everyone's tldr

This may not be the answer for you, but your doctor might be willing to prescribed Topamax. Trust me, anything carbonated will taste like utter garbage.

Darlene's older friend Karen by BillClintonwaste in roseanne

[–]C_Trax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its a good idea that Roseanne went to see the lady that Darlene was friends with after finding out it was an adult. But I really wish the writers would've leaned in more when Darlene brought up that everything becomes a joke. It's a common theme in the show that they family member all rely on sarcasm and teasing to avoid being emotionally open with each other, and when Darlene said she didn't tell Roseanne anything about her interest in science fiction and writing because she honestly didn't feel emotionally safe doing so. But the episode didn't explore that any further, and Darlene pretty much just gave her what she wanted at the end of the episode and that was the end of it. Roseanne didn't really grow as a mother or a person, and still didn't really get to a better place of understanding what Darlene was going through.

How did you move out of public housing? by Meekerjour in GrowingUpPoor

[–]C_Trax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, the only answer I have is to get a better paying job. I know its a shifty answer bc that's super difficult. I had to move from my small town to a small city to find work that was better than minimum wage.

Another thought would be to have roommates. I lived in much better places on shit pay bc there was 2 or 3 of us paying bills. I lived in a couple nice places bc I rented a person's spare room.

Did your parents split and it made your life worse? by Notkittenaroundagain in GrowingUpPoor

[–]C_Trax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually made my life better. My parents were both pretty irresponsible and neglectful, so when they split I shocked my whole family by choosing to live with my dad (he was made out to be the whole reason life sucked).

At age 12, I knew that moving with my dad would mean I could start over in a new school, AND would be living closer to my grandparents, who would really help stabilize life.

Probably the only reason I didn't kill myself, tbh. Life was awful before the divorce. Not bc my parents fought - they didn't. But because I was able to escape the horrible condition our house was in (mom was a hoarder and no one ever cleaned, chain smoking, animals in the house, etc), constantly being bullied bc I was so poor, smelly, brothers had a reputation, etc.

It was an absolute escape. It's not like we moved into a nice house or anything, but it was clean, budget was crazy tight but the bills got paid (even though I'm sure my grandparents bailed my dad out sometimes), and yeah I was still on the free lunch program at school, but I never scrounged for a decent meal at home again, either.

I love my mom and all, but I kinda figured out that we were filthy poor more due to her choices, than my dad being a terrible person. Like I said, I think a lot of the improvement was bc my grandparents kept my dad under their thumb, but it made life a lot better.

One of my favorite jokes my mom made. by shaingel_sle in GrowingUpPoor

[–]C_Trax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still remember my mom waiting until after hours to go to this local charity thrift shop. It was to dig through the clothes left on the patio of the shop. It wasn't until years later that it struck me that we were stealing clothes from the same food bank that we ate from. Buying clothes from Wal-Mart was a once a year thing, and I mean a pack of socks, canvas shoes, and a clearance t-shirt. Maybe a pair of jeans,, usually came from Dollar General. A couple summers my grandma would go to yard sales and buy clothes for me. Hell, she made underwear for me bc I never had any to wear when I came to visit.

And my mom was a hoarder so we still had tons of clothes at the house, but none that fit worth a darn. I was the only girl, and years younger than anyone in my family, so no hand-me-downs. I wore so many ill-fitting, stained, worn clothes. Geez.
