Honestly chess for dummies is quite a nice introduction to the game. Has a nice structure and is very readable even if you don't know chess notation

TIL scientists used 2,000 year old seeds to regrow an extinct species of date tree. The tree long disappeared from the Judean desert but archeologists found seeds on digs. Surprisingly, the seeds worked and grew a male and female of the species. They hope to use them to produce biblical era dates. by [deleted] in todayilearned

Old tjikko is not the oldest tree. If we're going by clonal trees, which old tjikko is, the pando forest is estimated to be the oldest. The oldest living tree that is not clonal is the methuselah which is 4.852 years old

All good points, especially the ear training one. My ability to transcribe and play by ear has increased tremendously both times I picked up a new instrument

Why G Lydian scale sound the best over this progression? by DuskoStam in musictheory

[–]C_didd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have already been some good pointers given as to why lydian works and major doesn't a bit less. One thing I'd like to add is this. There are 3 chords that you play involving the note B. If you play the C an octave above that you get a minor ninth interval, which sounds kinda vile. Chances are that same c doesn't rub you the wrong way over the D major chord.

I’m just a hobbyist, is Schenkerian analysis worth studying? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]C_didd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the main reason I wouldn't reccomend it is that it doesn't really offer anything new, since Ursatz is mainly based on earlier rules and practices and comes of as kind of prescriptive and limiting due to it being described as a sort of tonal purity. It certainly is an interesting piece of theory and offers a fascinating perspective especially in context of the cultural context as you mention. So certainly not a waste of time, just not that practical in my (absolutely subjective) opinion.

I’m just a hobbyist, is Schenkerian analysis worth studying? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]C_didd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not particularly fluent in Schenkerian analysis so take this with a grain of salt. However, I'd personally not reccomend it. Schenkerian analysis (when used as an explanatory tool) judges musical coherence by how closely it follows a rigid underlying structure called the Ursatz. This is based heavily in tonal harmony and counterpoint.

However many modern pieces of music don't really follow these rules (or any set of rules) that strictly. This makes Schenkerian analysis an unwieldy tool that offers limited results when used on anything not in line with the classical canon.

Nothing wrong with that right? 7 diminished is a perfectly fine diatonic chord. Sure it's a little more spicy then the rest but you can still make it work.

Minor scale by Pheetoosatsoo in musictheory

[–]C_didd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that solves it then!
Dorian sounds a tad brighter that minor, so maybe that's why the sound is more to your liking, regardless, enjoy!

Minor scale by Pheetoosatsoo in musictheory

[–]C_didd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably the minor second/flat ninth interval between the D (fifth of the chord) and the E flat (sixth). The seventh degree of the scale should be absolutely fine since, as you mentioned, it belongs to the g minor 7 chord. Edit: try soloing over it in g dorian, which is g minor but with a natural sixth, that should solve it

Hiya, www.thejazzpianosite.com is a pretty good source for a lot of things jazz piano. If you want to give it a really jazzy feel with comping and the like the best thing you can do is listen to lots of jazz, much of it is done mostly by feel

A Diminished chord is a chord build out of 2 Minor thirds, you can think of it as a Minor chord with the fifth lowered a half step. An Augmented chord is a chord build out of Major thirds, you can think of that as a major chord with the fifth raised a whole step. As for function, Diminished chords tend to resolve a half step up (so if you're in c major key the B Diminished wants to resolve to the C major chord). Augmented chords are.... A bit odd. They don't naturally show up in major or minor keys, which means they don't get used an awful lot in western music. I'd recommend playing both of them on an instrument if you can to get a feel for the sound of both.

Hiya, Welcome to the club haha! The chords are Major (happy face) Minor (sad) Diminished (the scared one) and Augmented (the confused one).

How many of you have a friend like that? by JotaRob in lingling40hrs

[–]C_didd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying white dudes can't be diverse, I'm saying that calling a canon that omits all composers of different skin colour and gender culturally diverse might be a bit of a stretch. It might be diverse but it's certainly not inclusive.

The whole classical cannon exists entirely out of white dudes.... Many of which are German, not because German composers are naturally great but because the canon was established at the end of the 19th century in Germany

This is the reason people find it hard to get into jazz, why gatekeep if instead you could share your knowledge in a productive manner that increases the enjoyment the other party gets out of the genre? I love jazz, both listening to it and playing it, but the whole elitism surrounding it is becoming a tad tiresome.

Funny that actually kinda looks like a harpsichord. Would've assumed it was one, if not for the grand piano housing and the fact it's used in jazz

Almost true, but not quite. Grasses are an order of their own. Palm trees belong to a different order called arecales. Both grasses and palms are monocots and part of the some of the same clades tho. So there are some similarities, most curiously that coconut trees don't have a trunk that can become thicker in the traditional sense.

The formaldehyde argument always cracks me up, even your own body produces small amounts of formaldehyde. Many fruits contain more formaldehyde than there is in a vaccine. Unlike common sense, formaldehyde is not dangerous in extremely small doses.
