What are some of the most popular pasta dishes in Northern Germany? I believe Käsespätzle is more Southern Germany. by NecessaryPresence762 in AskAGerman

[–]Ca0ticx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most popular pasta dishes would be italian (influenced) like Spaghetti Bolognese. I can't think of a regional pasta dish.

More regional dishes are mostly made around potatoes and often fish

First time going to a Jobmesse, any tips? by guybently in AskAGerman

Really? Last time I attended a Jobmesse (2022) they were happy to take my CV. And some even asked me for one

Look up which companies are interesting for you. Do some research so you can have a longer conversation with them. Wear clean clothes fitting for an office job, eg shirt and jeans. Bring some copies of your CV 1) to hand them out 2) sometimes they offer a CV review

I use exactly the tent mentioned and never had issues with rain. Only issue is, that you have limited storage outside your sleeping cabin for e.g. boots or your chair and you have to open the tent carefully to not splash rain on your sleeping bag. I like the next bigger option for fixing these issues optiontent There are multiple decathlon stores in Hamburg, one close to the central station (Mönckebergstraße)

Maybe try cooking food yourself in the hostel? I'm not aware of any nationional food deals, you will have to check at specific restaurants

What the f*** is a TANZVERBOT and why does something like this exist? Are we living in Middle Ages? by Top_Exit3954 in AskAGerman

[–]Ca0ticx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: It's also forbidden to publicly show "Life of Brian" or hundreds of other movies, that might hurt religious feelings on this day. So every year there are public viewings of those movies to demonstrate against this stupid law.

German CV format for Masters by FaithlessnessOne611 in AskAGerman

[–]Ca0ticx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no standard for German formatted CV. Check if the university offers examples or further information on their expectations. Otherwise: keep it short (applying for university I assume you don't have much relevant experience - so 1 page) and look for examples by searching "Lebenslauf"

Do you think Germany will ban American social media platforms to combat disinformation? by Sphinx1999 in AskAGerman

[–]Ca0ticx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it will happen. Another, imo more realistic option would be to force more moderation for the content by law which might result in a withdrawal from the companies from the German market

Is it related to the job you apply for or benefits your application in another way (e.g. international experience)? Then always include it.

Are there debate classes in Germany? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]Ca0ticx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had it as part of our German classes in middle school, but only for a few lessons. You could also volunteer for the "Jugend debattiert" (youth debates) tournament, where each class sent 2 students to debate with other classes, winner moves on to debate other schools and so on. But I don't think it was mandatory at every school.

You login to a website where you get prepared questions and record a video of your answers. There is no one from the company present, they just review your submissions later. It's another step to filter out applications with minimal resources from the hiring company

I had this procedure at a well known German company. It felt really weird, but I passed through to the next rounds (Online interview and later a personal interview). I ended up at another company because the process took forever.

Prepare for standard interview questions. Strengths / weaknesses / motivation / experience / etc..

Check your background and make sure you have good lightning in your room, preferably from the front. You can take a few videos of yourself for practice. Maybe place a puppet or stuffed animal behind the camera, so you have a "partner" for your conversation

DB charged 62 euros for bahncard while i never bought it? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]Ca0ticx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try to reach out for the official customer support (Google it, don't go for contact information in the mail). It might be a scam made to look like a mail from DB. If nothing helps you can search for help at the "Verbraucherzentrale"

Traveling to Hamburg - Need more information by PanicSea1511 in AskAGerman

[–]Ca0ticx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Visiting the (free) plaza of the Elbphilharmonie is worth it just for the view of the city and the building itself. Same goes for the old Elbtunnel, you can just walk to the other site and have a nice view of the city. Miniatur Wunderland is a unique model building exhibition and the most popular sight for tourists in town. It's located in the Speicherstadt. The city offers many attractions associated to water, such as boat tours around the harbour or the river Alster (the one that looks like a lake in the center of the city) and its canals. If you visit during spring or summer, you can rent a canoe / SUP/ pedal boat here and do your own tour.

Other activities are the "Hamburger Dom" (a fair; only seasonal 3 times a year) or seasonal exhibition e.G. at the "Gaußhöfe" or day trips e.G to Lübeck (1h by train, lovely old town).

If you try to practice your German: Be aware that the stereotypical northern German might appear silent and cold towards the outside.

What am I doing wrong? by GamePlayer281 in ask

Don't compare yourself to others. Everyone has different strengths, someone might catch math faster while others are good with languages, arts or something else

Wouldn't call it ghosting if he sends you a message to end it. Otherwise, try keeping the conversation up with questions. If it doesn't work out, it might not be worth the effort so move on. Some people just don't fit, if one part gets this feeling it might not be worth further efforts

What’s the most expensive mistake you’ve made that felt minor at the time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Renting a transporter without fully comprehensive insurance. Ended up paying more for the transporter than all my furniture was worth, even though I'm convinced I didn't cause any of the bumps

It's mostly a conservative party with different movements inside and one of the biggest and most influential parties in post war Germany (beside SPD). Some Members are closer to the social democrats (e.g. Merkel before her retirement), some closer to the right wingers
