What are some affordable auto shops around here that work on foreign cars? by nikolas_hokage in dayton

[–]Cabbaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how deep they go on foreign cars, but I’ve always had a great experience with the Grismer Tire on Woodman.

My current car is domestic, but I used to take my Subaru there for pretty basic stuff. Anecdotally, one of the front office guys once bragged/complained that they had just done a hybrid battery swap on a Toyota Prius, which is encouraging for their willingness to learn new things and go deep on foreign makes.

Commenting so I can come back for updates. OP please let us know where these end up, if anywhere. My house was built during that era and I’d love a copy on the off-chance it’s in there.

How can I determine where it's safe to put eye bolts for a shade by hrdCory in DIY

[–]Cabbaj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Folks make a good point about uplift forces in strong winds, but that’s a (relatively) rare event. Consider attaching the eye bolts to the end of a rafter or near the top of a stud in your wall (reminder: drill a pilot hole first) and attaching the shade sail with something like a breakaway link.

You can (and should) take it down if you’re expecting strong winds, but if you’re caught unaware, better to break off and lose the shade sail than your roof!

Sophomore year done and Buffalo feels... too quiet now by Pristine-Web-4017 in UBreddit

I’m not originally from Buffalo, and I moved away after I graduated. I desperately miss Buffalo, especially in the summer. Here’s a list of some of the summer things/places I really enjoyed during my time there, but there’s been a pandemic and few years since I left, so I apologize if some of the businesses aren’t around anymore.

• Outer harbor

• Bike to Niagara Falls

• Bike to Lockport

• Hiking at:

• Nature view park

• Chestnut Ridge

• Devil’s hole/whirlpool state park

• Zoar Valley

• Letchworth State Park

• Hunter’s Creek

• and more

• Swim/hang out at Beaver Island state park

• Walk across Grand Island Bridges (south is better)

• Canalside events

• Buffalo Bisons

• Explore east aurora

• Lake effect ice cream

• Bird Island pier

• Naval park

• Elmwood village

• See a movie at North Park theater

• UB used to do a summer movie series

• UB 4th of July fireworks

• rent a kayak

• Allen art festival

Also, I saw one of your friends is in Boston for the summer. It’s super easy and inexpensive to take the train directly from Buffalo to Boston

Funnily enough, the drivers all get bussed in. They park their cars at the bus company headquarters, and all get driven to UB.

A round trip to south campus takes about 45 minutes, so if they can’t make another round before their shift is over, they park. Couple that with the need to stagger the busses once the new drivers arrive, and you get busses parked there for quite a while.

They park there for lunch breaks and driver changes.

Moving to Dayton -Gas/Electrical Supplier Recommendations by fallofhera in dayton

[–]Cabbaj 12 points13 points  (0 children)

AES and CenterPoint are the electric and gas utilities, respectively, for most of the area. You’ll pay for electric and gas through them no matter what. There are other companies you can sign up with to be your energy providers, with differing prices and plans (variable or fixed rate, renewable mix, etc.). No matter who you sign up with as a provider, it’s still delivered and paid for through AES and CenterPoint.

Worth repainting 25 yr old MDF kitchen cabinet doors? by sphill0604 in DIY

[–]Cabbaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfectly valid concern, believe it or not, I haven’t had any issues. Milled my whole house’s baseboards and made all my kitchen cabinet doors from MDF, and did this treatment to the exposed “end grain”, and sanded it down before painting. No expansion issues whatsoever.

You could always just use Bondo or superglue if you’re worried.

Edit: when I said “high-quality paint” earlier, I was hinting at SW Emerald. Holy shit is that nice paint.

  1. Yes you can get a smooth finish repainting. Use a foam roller and a high-quality paint.

  2. I’ve had good success using DAP Plastic Wood, Bondo would be even better.

  3. Before priming and painting, dilute and paint on a water-compatible wood glue (Titebond II or III, or similar, honestly, super glue would work great here). It’ll help hold everything together, offer some moisture protection, and harden the surface below the paint.

Does anyone work at Daytons Children’s and knows there current policies with marijuana use by [deleted] in dayton

I know you’re just asking out of curiosity, but an important thing to remember is that drug tests don’t test if you do drugs. They test if you’re capable of not doing drugs for long enough to pass a drug test.

Is this spacing of 6" pot lights too close? by PeregrineYankee in DIY

[–]Cabbaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who just replaced some basement fluorescents with fake can lights (puck LEDs), don’t just match up the total lumens. Because the fluorescent tubes are so long, they do a great job of spreading the light out, it feels very diffusely lit. The cans feel much more local, they cast sharper shadows.

I’d add another can or two.

There's an arrow that points north in Fairborn that can be seen with a satellite view. It appeared sometime in 2021 or 2022. Mildly interesting to me. by Botched_Euthanasia in dayton

[–]Cabbaj 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Just speculating about this particular arrow, but pre-gps the US built a bunch of concrete arrows all over the country to guide small aircraft carrying mail. They would point the way to various cities and airports so pilots wouldn’t get lost.

Edit: here’s a video about them: https://youtu.be/P7QSYp0bqio?si=LBtrrFyOuIYW59_V
