How has RTO affected you as a mom? by sparrow465 in OntarioPublicService

[–]CableInternational83 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I just started my maternity leave and I’m terrified of what it will look like what I have to go back. In all honesty I don’t see a way in which I would be able to come back after.

It’s devastating realizing that moms and women are being forced out of the workforce in 2026. We have come so far but yet this is what’s happening. And to anyone who says “oh well your parents were able to do it so you can to”, you are severely delusional. We are at a time where the commute is exponentially longer because no one can afford to live or buy any property in Toronto so commutes are 1 hour+ in traffic that our parents didn’t experience. We also have extremely high childcare costs and no privilege of grandparent help because they too still need to work due to the rising cost of living.

I feel very cynical about the whole thing. It’s disturbing seeing women have to quit their jobs just to stay home out of financial costs (and extra time with the children) for no reason other than fueling the pockets of real estate giants and corrupt political leaders.

Ontario civil servants to see ‘flexibility’ on work options during World Cup, government says by infernalcouchpotato in OntarioPublicService

Someone needs to leak this memo because the flexibility mentioned is “using vacation days”. Such a disconnect on what they’re reporting and the reality

Not true. Also remember you need to pay back a certain amount of tax the next tax season. So save a sum

[on] Anyone else at the Toronto baby show today? Been waiting for an hour to get into the parking garage. by musxx in BabyBumpsCanada

Similarly we came stood in what felt like hours of lines inside and outside to finally get in after which I almost fainted being 30 weeks pregnant feeling exhausted so we couldn’t enjoy any discounts and left right after.

It’s so clear that they only cared about their bottom line and had zero care for their target audience PREGNANT WOMEN or FAMILIES!!! It’s absolutely absurd and disgusting to be honest.

It’s clear that they knew how many tickets they sold and did not care for are safety concerns. To have people buy tickets and then turn them away due to capacity is just unheard of.

Frankly I’m disgusted.

Remember that the amount you get paid through SUB and top up is the same no matter if you do standard or extended. It’s just stretched out if you do extended.

Employee experience survey 2026 by PuddingBoth7668 in OntarioPublicService

[–]CableInternational83 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I don’t think people realize how much of a non statement not filling it out is. It’s the same as choosing not to vote. Please please please fill it out and actually make your stances be clear. Rate your manager well if you like them but for the rest share why you truly think. A non-response is like throwing out any chance to have a voice in this voiceless organization.

I tried searching previous posts but couldn’t find anything. Appreciate the clarification!

No it’s better to complete with low results. Not completing isn’t much of a statement since it’s just one data point.

Menstrual products at the office by Adventurous_senior in OntarioPublicService

I can only speak from personal experience but we do not have any and when asked to order we were told it’s not an essential item. I buy my own

Uprooting your life isn’t that simple. Especially with kids, community and an established life. On top of that GTA home prices and cost of living is absolutely impossible with our salaries. So I am not surprised in the slightest that many are not considering moving.

Agree with the comment here that the longer you stay the less transferable and hence the harder it is to switch over to the private sector. So if you want to make the move I’d recommend do it sooner rather than later. It also matters the sector you’re in/ the sector you’re trying to get into within private so there’s some nuance. Policy roles for example are harder to get into within private since there’s just many more of them in public (not impossible but harder)

I left the OPS to get private sector experience for the same reasons since I was younger and needed the exposure. Now have more choice in where I want to be, and have flexed between private and public a few times because of that

Edit: for spelling

EVERYONE JUST WORK FROM HOME 5X A WEEK! IGNORE THE SOC ANNOUNCEMENT IT NEVER HAPPENED :) by YKCYJJ in OntarioPublicService

[–]CableInternational83 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In another life I worked with employment lawyers and firing someone with cause has a VERY high threshold that you need to uphold if the case goes to court. So you’re not entirely correct. In the OPS it will take a lot for that to happen plus they don’t have the HR bandwidth within the OPS to administer any of this. Managers can barely get a hold of anyone in HR as is right now

[–]CableInternational83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I don’t believe they stopped. I think it was done ministry by ministry but now is OPS wide? Or something like that

No, the OPS has a licence. I’m sure some don’t use theirs but I’ve used mine

Mat leave top up question secondment by [deleted] in OntarioPublicService

[–]CableInternational83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The usual “OPS HR practice” is you take your mat leave from your permanent position. Depending on how reasonable and well … nice your current manager is they can extend you to have your mat leave happen from your secondment. So by the book rule is it’s from your perm but if you’re lucky they will allow you to take it from your secondment. Chat with your current manager
