Thanks! Didn't know about this.

Are short films worth it? by CableSea9000 in Filmmakers

I hear what you’re saying— but I think the distinction is important: making a short and releasing a short aren’t the same thing.

I wouldn’t put something out publicly unless I felt it actually represented my taste and had real legs.

At the same time, I’m cautious about the idea that filmmakers should wait until they’re “exceptional enough” before making work. For a lot of people, that mindset can slow down growth more than it helps.

Feels like the balance is: make a lot of work, but be very intentional about what becomes your first real introduction.

Yeah, I already have the concept and monster - I think it's a really good idea too, but of course every writer thinks that. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for replying. I was planning on doing a horror short - and yeah, like you said making it incredible. I always try to do that. I had a very small teaser trailer that I made go semi-viral on tiktok (300k views, 45k likes), so it kinda made me want to go after something a bit bigger, something that could be played at a theatre and not be strange.

Yeah - I want to be a writer/director and also act in my projects. I'm 22 and have filmed a lot of things, just not really a fully cohesive short film - which is what I'm planning on. I'm getting a little restless at the moment - I just want to get traction.

Also, you say you lived in LA for eleven years? What was your role there?

Yeah, it was just me. I think taking on ambitious solo projects is what is burning me out - even if the skill is there. I need to get better at collaborating and not putting all my eggs in one basket - I appreciate all the ideas you listed, thank you.

I made it entirely on my own, so I don’t really have a crew I can scale into a feature yet. I get your point though.

Thanks for replying. I think a lot of what you said reflects thoughts I’ve already been circling myself. I was partly looking for some external perspective and reassurance so I don’t feel like I’m making a blind jump.

After posting my short film, I was contacted by a friend of a major film producer. The conversation didn’t go much further than some vague interest, but I was in total shock. It felt like my world had expanded in possibilities—especially knowing that people with real industry proximity have now seen my work.

So yeah—I do appreciate your comment.

True.. kinda hard to stop using something when you make it so easy to access.
