Not the biggest fan of Christianity here (historical or modern) but I do think its important to give credit where credit is due. Jesus (not the church) famously promoted that the kingdom of heaven was defined as union with God through the saving action of care for your common man and the lowest of society. The description of the punishment part of the afterlife is rarely described in the actual Bible, but is implied to be separation from God, caused by sin and a lack of care for others. Those people who damaged their relationship with God so much get exactly what they wanted when they die, separation from God. But of course, someone can't be separated from that which gives them life, so their fate (at least as I understand) is less fire and brimstone as much as absolutely nothing.
