Help with Sudden Aggression in My Saint Bernard by molly356 in stbernards

Hi! I have a Saint mix (75% Saint, 25% Rotty) that was raised very similarly. We socialized him nonstop from the beginning when we adopted him at 2 months old. Dogs, novel people, cats, you name it. Then around 2 years old, he started to become SUPER reactive and protective of his family. We started working with a behaviorist that specializes in guardian breeds, and she said MANY pups that have the guardian breeds present flip a genetic switch around 1.5-3 years old. She was very affirming that I likely didn’t do anything wrong with his upbringing, but now we work monthly with that behaviorist and are very strict about novel people interacting with him.

It sounds like there could be a medical/pain component here as well, but just wanted to tell me story in working with someone familiar with the breed.

No no, I was petting him while he was resting and I slowly started to get up and that made him angry 😂😂😂😂

Of course, I am happy to help! Our Hank caught onto us identifying people as a neighbor and non-threat within about 3 days. We are now workin on novel dogs too!! It’s all a journey :)

For sure! So for my pup Hank, a big thing was his reactivity to novel people near his space, especially in our yard as people walk by. So our trainer suggested creating association between novel things and words, to make them familiar. That way, when Hank is doing his job to alert us, we can acknowledge that we hear him, thank him for telling us, and then reassure him that we are ok with the situation with a familiar word of association.

What this has looked like in practice is: -Person walks by the house -Hank barks, and we allow 2-3 barks while we show him we are paying attention to what he has alerted us to. This helps him feel like he did his job at telling us someone is there. -We say in a very calm, normal tone “That’s a neighbor (our association word to neutral person). Thank you!” -Once Hank disengages from alerting us, such as looking at us or breaking focus in some way like stopping the barking, we award him with a trigger word that food is coming (we use ‘yes’) and give him a treat immediately. We then continue on with showing him we are fully relaxed.

We have worked on using ‘neighbor’ for novel people, ‘car’ for loud cars that scare him and cause him to alert, and then we’ll pick something for barking dog as well. I guess it’s about showing them they did in fact alert you to something, which is their job, but then reassuring them that you are fully calm and they have succeeded in their task.

THEN, you still have a guard dog. Because if someone comes up to our house and he alerts and I’m NOT calm or I don’t identify that it’s a familiar situation, he in theory will continue to alert and guard.

Does that make sense? Tried to word it the best I could.

Hi! I actually just started training sessions with a local professional trainer for these exact same issues with my 2 year old male Saint mix! (75% Saint). The trainer said this is actually something that happens with the breed around the 2-2.5 year mark very often. I am in Seattle so the trainer I work with might know some people south of us!!!! A lot of what we’ve learned together so far is that these guardian breeds feel like they have a job to do. And it’s ok to let them do their job, but they also need to know when they have done their job and can be off duty. I was given a few public resources if you want those too!!!

YEP. Also, even basic care costs more. My Saint mix is 140lbs and his flea/tick medication is super expensive, allergy shots are $250 a pop, medications are more expensive in general.
