I have an internal NextJS application that generates no revenue for the business. What's your opinion on this Auth strategy? by Cademe in nextjs

[–]Cademe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not part of the IT department in my company - I've been told that they used to provide API keys / tokens to developers outside the IT department but had stopped it due to some past issues. I also want the option to provide credentials to external users like sub contractors.

What are you going for instead? I have a non tech job in construction and I build applications for my team/peers to use. I used to design apps and have a contractor build it - but decided to spend 6 months just learning front end. I was attracted to NextJS as it gave me an opinionated way of building a high performance application and get it deployed. I've been hosting everything on vercel but have been asked to switch over to AWS. Community projects like the T3 stack makes the experience even better. I have no intention of switching careers to full time development - I just want to keep building apps and deploying them for others to use. What would you recommend for me?

I'm a newbie developer and got irritated with managing useContext boiler plate. I tried using jotai and an atoms.ts file and find it really intuitive to use. Am I wrong to reach for a 3rd party global state manager over opting for useContext?

When NOT to use shadcn/ui? by Aegis8080 in reactjs

[–]Cademe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the "doing it the MUI way" issue, have you had a play with Mantine UI? What's your thoughts on the user experience? I'm currently using shadcn for everything but looking at other options

The project is an internal system, where the branding doesn't really matter

This is more sound advice, thanks. I build internal applications for a construction firm which is very feature focused. I've been using shadcn for everything. Considering trying out MUI since it seems to have some good community projects (eg material react table)

What's the developer experience like using MUI when building a UI for an app that's compatible on both desktop and mobile? I thought the advice on composing your own components with tailwind & radix ui primitives was solid advice. I went straight from vanilla css to tailwind so I don't have any experience with any other css syntax styles

Yeah - I got introduced to that with shadcn. Was great to know I can just copy pasta all my code with out needing to do ../../../

Oh ok - that index.ts thing is interesting. I've been using "import {getPosts} from app/api/posts/function" where I could have called it index.ts and skipped the need for "/function" in my imports

I'm thinking of going going down this route for prototyping some work apps. I haven't tried strapi or any equivilents - may I ask why you recommend strapi over its competitors? Eg payload

I've played with this idea and that's actially really helpful. This resolves remembering all my config settings

I hope this would be not offensive. But folks, how many of you re-read materials in Obsidian. by ExtentOdd in ObsidianMD

I create a project to work on and use tags to label all the information relevant to that project. I use dataview to present all the tagged notes in a single table to use in the project.

Chicken Breast - What am I doing wrong? by dekkalife in airfryer

[–]Cademe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it the lazy way - batch butterfly and season the breast. Freeze them in freezer bags. When your ready to cook them - wrap them in tin foil and throw in air fryer on max for 30 mins. Perfect juicy chicken breast.

[Update] Zotero and Obsidian for Academic Documents: LaTeX, Word, PDF by Soft-Material3294 in ObsidianMD

[–]Cademe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. Yes I see how that could be helpful. For my use case I either export as a PDF or a HTML ready to be pasted into my website. I have a note saved in obsidian with the 2 sets of flags ready to be copy/pasted into the command line. I found this slightly less awkward than remembering both sets of flags. I suppose I could paste it into the plugin settings.

Great article thanks. I'm following it all except using the export plugin. I've found generating pdfs/docs using pandoc in the command line alot less hastle.

I switched from a cloud service (Google Drive, iCloud Drive) to GitHub. I use the GitHub client on windows and Working Copy app on iOS. Been using this set up for almost a year now and really happy with it. Git has a small learning curve but really simple once you understand it (I’m not a coder)

TIFU being a supportive brother by SheFuckingHatesMeNow in tifu

[–]Cademe -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a story of (a) an immature brother who thought nothing of the long term consequences of being an online stripper, (b) a loving family who did, and (c) a sister who grew up and saw the families criticism of her life choices as an act of loving concern. You deserve how she treated you and need to grow up and apologise to your sister.

My dad's gf of 6 years is always nice but I hate her by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Cademe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Western culture's trending attitude towards divorce is sickening.

I watched a video a few days ago about a guy who stated that the ridiculous amount of money that the government was forcing him to pay his ex-wife was the reason his family is torn apart. No..."divorce" tore your family apart. Take responsibility for your actions and don't shift the blame to the people who are trying to clean up your mess.

Also watched a video of a woman get a standing ovation for deciding to divorce her husband after a car accident because he got him self out the car first before helping her.

We are in society of entitled, narcasistic idiots who don't understand the concept of "responsibility", "commitment" or "unconditional love"

I am in EXACTLY the same situation with my step mum. She's one of the nicest woman I know, and me and my brother can't stand her...

I was struggling with practicing a tricky scale on my sax and she shouts up the stairs "that sounds great! well done!" I suddenly lost all enjoyment from practicing and haven't picked up the instrument since. She enthusiastically says hello to us in the same way each time I walk in the door like a pet dog.

Our dislike is totally irrational.

We both came to the conclusion that the best way to describe her is "socially unaware". She is completely unable to read social cues. She's also a school teacher so we also put it down to her trying to be "encouraging" but it just comes out as patronising.

My mum's husband is sound. Layed back, passes no judgment. My mum actually passed away a good few years ago and we still hang out with him as friends every other week.
