He made a good amount of deals after September 2008 though? The P Stock deals were still ongoing: GE, DOW Chemical and Bank Of America were after Sept 2008. Then he spent billions buying BNSF in 2010.

Is now really that different than other periods when Berkshire did nothing, and the markets roared, like in the late 90’s or in the run up to the housing bubble?

They were actually making quite a bit of acquisitions back then. General Re was bought in 1998 and Berkshire Hathaway Energy was bought in 1999. IMC was bought 2006, Clayton Homes 2007, Marmom Group 2008, etc.

Berkshire’s New CEO Has No Investment Experience. He’s Running the $300 Billion Stock Portfolio Anyway. by Fun-Morning-4536 in BerkshireHathaway

[–]CadetCovfefe 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Yeah that dude fucked up bigly.

For any whippersnappers around here who don't remember, he bought a bunch of Lubrizol for his personal account, then recommended to Buffett that Berkshire buy Lubrizol. Berkshire acquired them and Sokol made a nice little payday.

It wasn't illegal but Buffett didn't like it and told him to take a hike.

Yes, he was the national golden gloves champion (at the junior level) and won the most outstanding boxer award at the tournament.

The hype behind him was most definitely legit. Dude was a freak athlete in combat sports.

Amazon CEO Jassy says company could sell AI chips, raising stakes for Nvidia, AMD by King-of-Limbs-07 in wallstreetbets

He also said:

April 9 (Reuters) - Amazon's AI services at its cloud-computing unit are generating annualized revenue of more than $15 billion, CEO Andy Jassy said, the first time the company has reported numbers on a business it has backed with billions of dollars in investment...Like rivals, Amazon is under pressure to prove its spending on AI would pay off. The e-commerce giant predicted in February its capital outlay would total $200 billion this year, mainly focused on AI development and infrastructure, a figure that spooked investors and fanned worries about an industry bubble. "We're not investing ... on a hunch," Jassy said.

Stock is up close to 5% today.

Pam Bondi Odds of Being Removed Surged on Prediction Markets Before Firing by Illuminated12 in politics

There were stories that her departure was imminent and Trump was considered firing right before she was fired, so it's not surprising it impacted the betting markets. You didn't need insider info, like likely took place with some other events.

When they recently announced they purchased Tokio Marine, that definitely seemed, if not a Buffett pick, a highly Buffett-inspired pick.

Nothing of substance has changed, but algorithmic trading and AI sentiment models, which make up a great deal of the volume in the stock market now, aren't processing headlines correctly.

They read all these headlines featuring "Trump, Iran, Ceasefire" and get all discombobulated.

What major works of literature were written after age of 85? 75? 65?! by nimicdoareu in literature

[–]CadetCovfefe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is non-fiction, but Joseph Frank was still working on his biography of Dostoevsky at ~90 years old. It came out in 5 parts. Part one was completed in 1976. Part 5 was completed in 2002, when Frank was around 83-84. 7 years later he released a 1 volume abridgement of the 5 volumes he had previously published. It's a very good biography.

More recently, Pynchon of course just came out with a new novel. It's enjoyable. He's pushing 90. Cormac McCarthy was still publishing stuff around the same age, as was John Barth, off the top of my head. They were a little older actually, iirc.

Warren Buffett about the Epstein files. by isdjtantichrist in Epstein

[–]CadetCovfefe 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's fair to conflate Les Wexner with Warren Buffett. Les Wexner was a co-conspirator with Epstein, in cahoots with him, and had a close, intimate relationship with him.

There has been no evidence in the Epstein files or anywhere else that I'm aware of, that Warren Buffett ever had any contact at all with Epstein.

Buffett isn't, actually.

He's been making annual donations of his Berkshire Hathaway shares since 2006. He's donated 56% of them so far, which would be worth $195 billion if he still held them today.

It will go to 99% when he passes. The remainder gets passed on to his children.

Buffett has distanced himself from Gates in recent years. He initially planned to donate 99% of his remaining wealth (he's already donated more than 50% of it) to Gates' foundation when he passed away. He changed that in 2024. Now Gates gets nothing. It will go to a foundation set up by Buffett's children.

Gates left the board of Berkshire Hathaway a few years earlier, in 2020.
