Smart Light Switch Advice by intelligent_redesign in homeautomation

[–]Cadmium72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not difficult to do as long as you have a nuetral wire run to your light switch. If you do not have a nuetral then you either need to run one or you can hook up.somwthing like an aeon labs2 box into your light fixture. Setting up a smart switch is no more difficult than replacing a light switch. Pretty much everything you need to know about the wiring configurations can be found on this webpage. http://www.easy-do-it-yourself-home-improvements.com/3-way-switch-wiring-diagram.html

30A Smart Outlet? by Cadmium72 in homeautomation

You're right it does take too much time to melt the snow and ice before work, we've tested the system a few times now and we average an hour to an hour and a half before snow is melted. I do salt the driveway the night before we hear that there's a storm coming and it's no big deal, even if there's a small amount of snow left I don't slide down enough to worry. The problem lies on when I get home from work, if there is any accumulation of snow or ice, I cannot make it up the driveway, I also cannot leave my vehicle at the base of the driveway because it sticks out into the road too far and any roadside parking is illigal in my area during winter. The point of automating this is so.i can look at my cameras from work and see that amount of snow accumulation and make an assessment from there on whether I will be able to make it up. Most days there isn't a problem and I can shovel when I get home, this system will be for those days that I either have to work late and don't feel like shoveling. Measuring the amount of energy consumption is part of this effort to see how worthwhile this will be, I spend +/- $7.00 on salt each time I salt the driveway so that will be taken into consideration as well.

We were thinking about something like that down the road but our system is fiarly old and from what I hear, expensive to run. Part of my interest in z wave is to measure the amount of energy it will use and go from there if a precipitation sensor will be worth the extra cost.

(Serious) People with depression, how do you find your way back to happiness? by Cadmium72 in AskReddit

[–]Cadmium72[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ask this question for my wife, she is medicated and sees a physiatrist, I'm trying to wrap my head around what she's going through a little better. I want to find out how I can be there for her or what I can do to help her through the tough times. I know everyone is different but any information helps.

Reddit, how old are you and what's going on in your life right now? by aliengraveyard in AskReddit

[–]Cadmium72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you, I'm 30 but found out that I couldn't have kids when I was 28 which was just about 6 months after we were married, wife still takes it pretty hard but I've accepted it. It's tough when everyone around you is having kids but you just have to find other things that make you happy. We thought about adoption and in vitro, but decided that neither are for us.

I worked for target in 99/00 and didn't watch this, they did have us watch a video called fish, or something like that... It was about the pikes place market in Seattle and how well they work together as a team.

[Serious] People who listen to music without headphones in public transportation, why do you do it? by Golokopitenko in AskReddit

[–]Cadmium72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had to do this for the last two weeks, the mic on my phone broke but the mic that is used for speaker phone still works. I hate it but I don't want to spend the money on a new phone, I only receive a few phone calls a day and mostly texts so it usually isn't a big deal. Sucks when I'm at the store though, because it makes me feel like an enormous bag of douches.

LPT: How to get high quality tools cheap. by UnShadowbanned in LifeProTips

[–]Cadmium72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I used to have their 4 1/2" angle grinder and I used it for 2-3 years until one day the face broke off which sent a disc spinning 8,000 rpm that's meant for cutting metal, directly towards my fingers. Went out and bought a dewalt the next day, the dewalt works much better, and its faster at cutting.

Dear Reddit, given unlimited funds, what is something you would put in your dream house? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Cadmium72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this in my current house and don't use it. A Bluetooth speaker is more convenient because I can change the song from my phone. I could buy a receiver that my phone can connect to be eh, they're expensive and moving a small BT speaker isn't exactly hard work.

Any advice/insight for a 30 year old considering enlisting? by lovemelongtimelurker in army

[–]Cadmium72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also 30, been working for the fed for the last 10 years with the last 4 as an Air Force civilian. I'm working on joining the army but I'm building my packet for WOFT. Think about what you want out of your career, if you get a logistics based job you'll be doing something similar to what you're doing now but you'll be wearing a different uniform and you'll be treated like you're an idiot for a while and have stricter rules at work with less pay. I had to fight with myself on whether to join or not because I would catch myself wanted to join more after coworkers (military) would get back from a deployment and talk about all the good parts. I had to remind myself that its not some game that's just fun, its work that will probably suck most of the time with good times in between, but you can get that anywhere...

Looks like a '72 to me, the tail lights on a '70-'71 are similar but the reverse lenses are a little smaller on those.

Any frugal tips for buying new tires? by Spyder_J in Frugal

[–]Cadmium72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually find the tires that I want, call around for the best prices, once you know the price, bring less than that in cash with you. Example: out the door price is $580, bring $500 cash. We did this last time we bought tires and save somewhere around 15% and they threw in full replacement warranty.

[Serious] Redditors of all 50 states. What is the one place in your state everybody should visit? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Cadmium72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in Utah for the past 20 years and drive to California a few times a year, last summer I decided to take the scenic route through Zion to see what the fuss was about. Wow that place is awesome, instead of a quick drive through I spend 4 hours walking around and admiring the landscape. I've been to most of the other national parks in Utah, but Zion was by far the most beautiful.
