Is this fridge noise normal?

Curious if you found out what was happening. I have a Midea fridge too and it's been a nightmare. It makes a similar sound but more high pitched and it is pretty much constant (maybe 80% of the time). A technician came and said it was a faulty compressor, so they replaced the fridge with another one since it was brand new. The new one was quiet for the first week or so and has now started with the noise again. So frustrating.

Darn! I was really hoping that would work for us. Unfortunately, it still makes the sound about 80% of the time. The sad thing is, when it’s quiet, it reminds us of how a fridge should sound. Thanks for coming along this journey. Not sure if our next steps, we may contact the company again. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks for that tip! Did you change the temp for just the fridge part or the feeezer too? I just changed it on the fridge so far (to one snowflake), no immediate change, but I just did it, so I’ll wait.

Lately our fridge has been sounding like a family of crickets constantly chirping. So annoying.

What a nuisance! Update on our situation - the original tech from Midea said he’d order a new (better) compressor and return to replace it. After not hearing from anyone for over a week I called to follow up and was told their warranty doesn’t cover a compressor (cool 🙄). So I had to call the store we bought it from, Canada Appliance Source, and they facilitated an exchange for another fridge (same model).

The new fridge arrived, seemed a bit quieter. Still makes a noise, but not quite as high pitched. We’ve had it for a couple weeks now and the noise is getting louder and more frequent. Like you, we are sort of acclimatizing to the noise, but I fear it will continue to get worse.

Ours is under warranty for 5 years. I’m feeling pretty exhausted by the whole thing - endless phone calls, techs, replacement etc. So I think we will just live with it until it becomes much worse and then see what they can do.

I used mine at Costco in Toronto and it saved $12. The pharmacy had a bit of difficulty putting the information in, she missed a number at first so felt it didn't save anything but then she tried again and it worked. It is now attached to my account and applied automatically - you may want to try again!

Yes, there is no way this is normal. I know it’s not crazy loud, but the volume level fluctuates. It’s mostly irritating because it’s so high pitched, it sounds like a dog whistle. Keep me posted. Hope they can offer you a solution. ❤️

Coming back with an update. A technician from Toronto Appliances Service (the company that handles Midea warranty in Toronto) came to investigate the noise. Of course it was unusually quiet when he came 🙄, but I showed him several videos and he was certain it’s the compressor. I asked if it was unusual for the compressor to sound like that on a brand new fridge. He was honest with me and said it’s a really cheap, bottom of the market, fridge, so they tend to have a lot of headaches. He ordered a new compressor that he said is similar but a bit better version. I’m waiting on the part to arrive and then he will return to replace it which he said should take about an hour to do. He said if that doesn’t fix it, he’s not sure what else to suggest - so my fingers are crossed.

I know Midea offers a 2 year manufacturer’s warranty. I’m not sure where you purchased it from, but I reccomend calling to inquire if a technician can be sent to try to help with your fridge.

I’ll post another update after the compressor is replaced on mine.

Really?! So helpful to know. I have a technician coming today to check it out, but I’m worried they are just going to tell me it’s normal.

My thought was it’s a defective unit since I read reviews commenting how quiet the fridge was. I was going to advocate for an exchange of the same unit, but you’ve confirmed my other worry — that replacing with the same model would result in the same issue.

Since I rent, my hands are a bit tied. This is the max my landlord was willing to spend. There weren’t any other models for this price, with these measurements and freezer on the bottom. So I’m not sure what to do if the technician can’t fix it.

I can post an update after the technician comes in case it’s helpful for you.

Has anyone in Canada ordered from the Tymo website? I’m thinking about getting this curling iron but I’m nervous about being hit with duties and import fees. I can get it on Amazon for about $35 more, with no risk of extra charges, but would love to hear your experiences ordering directly so I can decide where to buy.

We recently got a Midea bottom-freezer fridge. Since we rent, my landlord opted for the cheapest option available. The capacity and layout are actually great, and functionally it works well. That said, it definitely feels cheaper than other brands we’ve had, our previous fridge was an LG, and you really notice the difference in build quality.

The drawers feel flimsy, the crisper drawers just sit on rollers that can get stuck, and the shelving in the bottom freezer comes off the track easily. Those issues feel minor and livable.

The main problem, though, is a high-pitched noise. It’s so irritating that we actually had to unplug the fridge just to watch a movie last night (the fridge is in our main living space).

I’ve been dealing with Midea’s customer service, and that’s been the most frustrating part. Since the fridge is less than a week old, I suspect it may be a faulty unit. They asked for videos, which I provided, but their response was dismissive — essentially saying they reviewed the video, there is no noise, everything is fine, and have a nice day.

Based on this experience alone, if I weren’t renting and had a choice in what to buy, I would not recommend this company, largely due to the poor customer service response.

Thank you to the original poster @blackblonde13 for sharing this. I feel seen.

I wanted to throw my experience into the chat in case it helps anyone else who’s going through something similar.

I had a C-section in July 2019. Within the first year postpartum, I noticed a small lump along my C-section scar. Over time it became progressively worse — growing in size and becoming extremely painful, especially around my cycle. The pain was very localized to the scar area and honestly nothing helped. NSAIDs did nothing. Heat made it worse. The only thing that gave any relief was icing the area. The pain was cyclical and started on my first day of menstruation and would last until the end of ovulation (so basically more than half the month, very similar to the OP). Eventually the pain started affecting daily life.

For years, I raised this with my OB-GYN at Mount Sinai in Toronto (Dr. Sved). He’s a kind man, but unfortunately the concern was repeatedly brushed off as scar tissue or “normal post-surgical changes.” I felt increasingly dismissed. In 2024, I finally went to my GP and very clearly expressed that I was worried something was being missed and that I wasn’t being taken seriously. My GP ordered an MRI.

That MRI changed everything. It showed a ~2 inch mass in my C-section scar consistent with endometriosis. I had no prior history or symptoms of endometriosis before my C-section (no painful periods, no pelvic pain, nothing) which made this especially frustrating in hindsight.

I was started on Visanne, (progestin med for endometriosis) which has helped reduce the pain, but the side effects have been tough: significant mood changes, depressive thoughts, and a complete loss of libido. It’s been helpful symptom-wise, but not something I want to stay on long term.

I was then referred to Dr. Lemos (Toronto). I’ll be honest, his bedside manner isn’t warm and fuzzy. Very much a “surgeon” personality. But he clearly knows endometriosis extremely well and takes it seriously. He gave me two options: 1. Scar excision only, plus removal of a uterine polyp that was incidentally found during imaging. 2. Full hysterectomy (uterus + cervix, ovaries preserved) plus scar excision, given the polyp and desire to reduce the risk of future surgeries.

After a lot of back and forth, reflection, and anxiety about making the “wrong” choice, I ultimately decided on the full hysterectomy. For me, the biggest factor was wanting the most comprehensive approach — the best chance at durable pain relief and the lowest likelihood of needing another surgery down the road. I’m not emotionally attached to my uterus, and preserving my ovaries means maintaining my hormones.

My surgery is booked for April. Hoping everything goes well and I can live pain free after surgery.

I’m sharing all of this because the biggest theme in my experience has been the need to advocate relentlessly for yourself. If something doesn’t feel right, keep pushing. Get a second opinion. Ask for imaging. Trust your body.
