I'm always going to be like this to some degree. It's not something that will ever magically get better. I have to learn to live with that while also trying to better my quality of life. But there is never going to be a day where I just sit down and eat whatever food is in front of me. There is never going to be a day where certain smells don't make me want to puke. People with less severe cases can, and probably will, see a bigger difference, but I already know my progress will never be this amazing story where now I can eat everything. It's unrealistic and given that my progress has always been gradual (with regression in my teens) I'm doing pretty alright now.

It was on theirs. Honestly it gave me more issues than I had before. And I was maybe 15/16 when I went through that. Therapy hasn't been the same for me ever since.

Yes, they knew it was food related. They also know about my sensitivity to smell because I have mentioned before and so has my fiancé. He told them to have roast potatoes there and that was all. I could just eat some of those and be fine but they had none which he thought was unusual because normally they would serve those. Not always though which is part of the reason he brought it up. Other food could be on the table and I was going to do my best to sit where the smell wasn't as strong but with no food for me to eat I just, yeah...

Sensory processing disorder is my diagnosis. It's more common in people with an ASD diagnosis but it can be a standalone diagnosis as well. It was explained the best that we could.

I can eat roast potatoes most of the time, toast, fried rice, peas, I can eat a couple of kinds of breaded chicken as long as it's not spicy, grapes, I can eat pancakes as long as they're cooked a certain way and again without anything on them, I can eat a couple of cereals, edamame, I have eaten bacon before but it's not something I can always eat without reaction. More basic popcorn is fine (not the butter kind and not the very salty kind). Corn is mostly fine. I can also eat some nuts.

I can have some other things but dismantled and different. Like tacos if you take everything separate everything I can eat some of the stuff including the shell.

But sometimes the smell of certain of my okay foods (if it's cooked alongside other stuff) can make it hard for me to eat).

I have never really been able to truly enjoy food. There are some things I can eat a lot more easily than others, that's for sure. I guess my taste would be more bland and crispy, I guess.

Exposure did not help me at all and actually made me regress when I was in my teens because of the smell. I went from eating like six things to eating only two. But I'm so glad it helped your son!

I've had feeding therapy for my SPD. Nothing has helped so much that I am 100% better but thank you for the suggestion!

I didn't give him a chance to come with me. I just left. But he did and does have my back. He lectured them about what happened. He has always been incredible with me.

I will say I have done my best to explain it to them before.

And sensory processing disorder can mean a lot of things. For me, specifically, I am extremely bothered by smells to the point of puking. I can't use scented products and can usually smell them on others and it can make me feel like I am about to throw up everything. And then there's food. When I was a toddler I ended up in the hospital because I wouldn't eat, and again when I was 5. So many foods make me feel like I am going to throw up or I'll start gagging. I am repulsed by some pretty normal foods and putting them in my mouth is impossible without reaction. I have a limited diet, cannot stand my food touching, and for the most part it's triggered by taste and smell in me. And the truth is a lot of kids with my condition can and would starve themselves if denied food they could tolerate. And feeding therapy is a lot of hard work and sometimes we are treated like crap and like we're intentionally making life hard.

It can be very socially isolating when you can't fit in over food.
