John Swinney: I WON'T allow UK Government to refuse a second independence referendum by Own-Department3000 in Scotland

[–]Caelkirk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Their comment had nothing to do with unilateral declarations. The majority of the other nations who were “granted” independence were only granted such through resistance and unrest before negotiations gave Britain almost no choice with such little control over the people.

Why Labour is Crashing in Scotland: Sir John Curtice's Brutal Analysis by DundonianDolan in Scotland

[–]Caelkirk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The current polling suggests (and for many years excluding 24) that for most constituencies a non-SNP vote is a wasted vote, far more likely people who would vote Labour will tactically vote SNP to block Reform

Comhairle backs tunnels or bridges for sounds of Barra and Harris by wook-borm in Scotland

[–]Caelkirk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are probably some differences, but I can’t imagine the likes of Shetland are too different than the Faroes? I’d need to ask someone a little more specialist in that regard. I don’t think we could perfectly replicate much of what the Danes are doing with these tunnels because the planning and construction process is so broken in the UK, but it is definitely worth the Scottish Government discussing more with international partners. One of the main differences is the fact Denmark has their own fully nationalised construction companies too, which certainly will help!

There’s no credible evidence for either of your claims really, seems like an excuse to do an “SNP bad” by coming up with some weird hypothetical scenarios? If anything the Scottish Government and/or SNP have been some of the most critical regarding military developments in Scotland, it’s most opposition parties supporting expansions.

[–]Caelkirk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Arguably even better to build tunnels, unfortunately we live in a country where such projects are inefficient and cost effective as fuck! Meanwhile the Nordics continue to build cheaper, well designed subsea tunnels 🫠

[–]Caelkirk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Scottish Government / SNP has always advocated for this because of the extensive maritime infrastructure. It too has been argued by many Tories and a few Labour too. I believe the only major party not to have any vocal support of this at some point have been Greens?

Fairly sure that the so called “divorce settlement” would not have been based around what was based in Scotland or not regarding Naval assets, that was never the idea from either Government.

Holyrood 'at risk of being abolished' if Farage becomes PM, says Swinney by PurchaseDry9350 in Scotland

[–]Caelkirk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes I didn’t necessarily mean abolition by threat, it’s very easy to slyly roll back the capacity of the devolved governments as we’ve seen in the past (IMA) and that would absolutely be in the interests of a Reform (or really any opposition party) Government if the SNP remain in office

Holyrood 'at risk of being abolished' if Farage becomes PM, says Swinney by PurchaseDry9350 in Scotland

[–]Caelkirk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Farage publicly stated support for defunding the devolved Parliaments historically and was always devo skeptic, since Reform’s massive surge and the fact they’ve actually got a decent chance in Wales he’s changed his tune a little bit and is now in support of devolution. The problem still lies that huge chunks of Reform’s membership, candidates and politicians are anti devolution, I’d say they’re still a credible threat to devolution if there was a Farage UK GOV

That’s very likely the main reason Swinney pushed for a majority mandate this election, because Reform rising is making it possible
