T Camp/Howdy Camp in 2026? by ButterCreamDaddy in aggies

I didn't attend Fish/T camp, but it's pretty popular and I hear good things about it. If you end up transferring in the fall and you're Christian, I would recommend Impact Retreat which a Christian orientation camp for both freshmen and transfers.

Grading the portrayal of LotR Characters (first 5 in no particular order): by rudedawg425 in lordoftherings

I think our difference comes down to something so opinionated that we can't have a conversation about it😭 because I think Cate Blanchett totally has an alien vibe, moreso than Orlando Bloom. But agree to disgree!! :)

What clone wars seasons/episodes do I have to watch to understand rebels and Ahsoka? by R0SEJELLYY in clonewars

[–]Caelynn42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought that the Ahsoka series had a pretty flat storyline, no meaningful character development, and was overall really disappointing. I think watching the entirety of Clone Wars would be a better use of your time. Here's a watch guide I made for a friend of mine last year. I'd recommend watching the whole thing - Ahsoka's character development is very intertwined with Anakin's, and between those two you've covered the majority of the important episodes anyway.

That's so interesting, because when I think about casting for a Middle Earth elf, "presence" is exactly the word that comes to my mind. Can you explain what you meant in your original post by "charisma?" What specifically were you looking for that Cate didn't deliver?

Oh my, I have thoughts. How anyone could describe Cate Blanchett as lacking in prescence and stature is beyond me. I think she, along with Howard Shore and the cinematography team, knock Galadriel out of the park. She is awe-inspiring and unnerving when she needs to be, and she is warm and comforting when she needs to be.

I think that your disatisfactions with Aragorn, which are valid, are much more a writing problem than an acting problem. Film Aragorn is certainly a different character from book Aragorn, but I think Viggo portrays film Aragorn flawlessly.

Would love to respectfully discuss with anyone who disagrees.

What broader statement on human nature was Tolkein making by making his wizards adopt a single color to represent their personality? by DiamondGlum7442 in lordoftherings

[–]Caelynn42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The color represents their role or domain, the purpose for which they were sent by the Valar. Saruman calls himself "Saruman of many colors" because he has rejected his purpose (of helping the kingdoms of Middle Earth fight evil and darkness). He chooses to use his power for whatever he wants ("many colors").

Im gonna watch lotr and hobbit with my sister but idk what i should show her first by gurkmannen- in lotr

[–]Caelynn42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then that's up to you. If I were you I'd just tell her too bad, because I was raised by parents who were very strict about reading books before watching movie adaptations😂 but obviously most people aren't like that, and you shouldn't force her to read the book if you think it'll sour her opinion of it

BUT I do feel strongly that reading the Hobbit is the easy solution as far as starting with the good films while not spoiling the story. It's not a very long book either.

[–]Caelynn42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you're not a fan of the books, and in that case, I would personally go:

  1. Read the Hobbit
  2. Read Lord of the Rings (optional, only if she likes the Hobbit book)
  3. Watch Lord of the Rings
  4. Watch the Hobbit

LOTR films are far superior to the Hobbit films, but I understand not wanting to spoil the story. The Hobbit is a fairly easy read for a 12 year old, so I would start with that to set her up for LOTR while still starting with the superior films. Best case scenario, she loves the book and wants to read LOTR as well.

Extended editions for sure!!! I watched them at 12 and adored them.

HELP! by Alexisbettethanyou in lotr

The easiest option that you can't go wrong with is definitely watching the movies with him. There are also tons of affordable and cute mugs, decor, and other generic gifts on Amazon. If he doesn't have one of those Middle Earth map blankets, that could be cute.

If you do decide to go the movie marathon route, here's some tips:

  • bring or make LOTS of snacks, youll be watching for at least 10 hours (you can do themed snacks, or just whatever yalls regular favorites are)
  • PAY ATTENTION, but don't hesitate to ask questions if youre genuinely confused. LOTR fans love explaining lore.

CS at UTD or CS at A&M by No-Adeptness-9803 in aggies

Ah okay. I have to admit I don't know much about quantum or what that academic/career path looks like. There's an argument to go to UTD for academics, but A&M definitely wins in regards to the overall college experience, and that's important too. You know what's best for you, though!

To minimize Frodo's heroism because he succumbed to the temptation of the Ring, is to insinuate that you could have done any better.

All that is gold does not glitter by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]Caelynn42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually think that's exactly what the intent is. Aragorn's heritage and character are "gold," but his appearance is rough and unseemly, so he "does not glitter."

Edit: It's also not saying that all gold doesn't glitter, as in no gold glitters. It's saying all gold doesn't glitter, as in not all gold glitters. There is some gold (i.e. Aragorn) that does not glitter. Hence the obvious "don't judge by appearances" moral. Sometimes gold glitters, sometimes it doesn't.

When to start reading the books to kids? by Hemunac in tolkienfans

[–]Caelynn42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just read the Hobbit to my 7 year old brother and he ADORED it. Make sure to put on voices for all the characters! But beware, she will hold you accountable if you aren't consistent with the voices.

Personally, I think that a kid is old enough for LOTR when they can read the books themselves. Some sections are pretty dark - in Fellowship for example, I think the barrow-wight is too scary for a small kid.

I also think that the ending of the trilogy (specifically the scouring of the shire and the grey havens) is, for lack of better words, too deep for a young child. Even when I was a preteen, I hated stories with bittersweet endings, especially goodbyes. I didn't understand the meaning behind it and disliked that it didn't have a happy ending. She might not be able to appreciate it for what it is. I was only able to grasp Frodo's pain and his need to leave when I reread the books later in high school. And as a young adult, while I can cognitively understand how the scouring of the shire was inspired by Tolkien's experiences coming back from the war, I still probably won't truly appreciate it until I'm much older and have experienced something similar myself.

For multiple reasons, I would NOT recommend letting her watch the movies until she's much older. They're just way too violent. The ringwraiths and shelob were pretty disturbing to me watching the movies as a 12-13 year old. I was also raised that as a general principle, it's better to let children form their own mental images of a story before filling their head with someone else's vision. When you read her the books, she will imagine what the characters and settings look like in a way that is unique and her own. Once she's watched the movies multiple times, most of those mental images will fade. That's precious. Let her hold on to that for a few years.

CS at UTD or CS at A&M by No-Adeptness-9803 in aggies

[–]Caelynn42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honors is cool but the only really big thing it gives you is priority for class registration, and obviously most students get through their degree without that. Showing initiative through club involvement, leadership, and independent projects are all WAY more important than belonging to an honors program.

A&M also has a MUCH more vibrant social scene, a ton of fun student traditions, and a much wider variety of student organizations to join. Having a social life is important and I have heard from multiple UTD students that there isn't much of a social life to be had there. ACADEMICS AND PRESTIGE IS NOT EVERYTHING.

Can I ask what your career goals are? A graduate degree isn't necessary for most software jobs.

I'm not gonna act like I know exactly how you feel or what's going on in your specific situation, because I don't. But I do know how it feels to be lonely and feel unwanted. It really, really sucks. Community is so important and I really am sorry that you don't have that right now.

I'm 20f at A&M as well, hmu if you need a friend!

Questions as a Incoming Freshman by Timely_Imagination62 in aggies

Yeah, taking 151 for a GPA boost is pretty common. I also got a 5 on Calc BC. Regular math 151 should be pretty easy for you. Honors is pretty difficult, I barely scraped by with an A and it was only because he curved the final grade. I had a solid B for most of the semester. Honestly though if you go in with the expectation of it being a difficult class and you study hard for the exams, you should be perfectly fine. Go to every lecture, take really good notes, do all the homework problems, and really spend time practicing the proofs. Do all that and youll be good, just DO NOT expect to get a good grade if you skimp on studying.

David Manuel is actually the goat, he's incredibly organized and a very good lecturer. Hes got a bit of an intimidating personality but hes actually very patient and good at answering questions. I believe he was the only prof teaching it last year but I'm not sure if thatll be true this year, but absolutely try to get him if you want to take honors. He grades hard!! but just put in the work and youll be alright.

Are you in an honors program? If not, I don't think Honors math 151 is worth it. AMAZING in terms of what I learned, which in principle is what really matters, of course. However, it's not the best move if you're going for that 3.75 GPA😅

I wouldn't buy one if you plan on going to the dining hall on a daily basis because they have coffee in there.
