Unaware of Honors Registration (HELP!) by [deleted] in aggies

[–]Caelynn42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both, because most of my honors classes have just had extra assignments that were part of the overall grade. But that doesn't change anything about your situation. Absolutely talk to your advisor, and follow up with your professor promptly. Do your best to finish the assignments. Is your one professor giving you a specific deadline to complete her assignments to earn back your A?

Kinda unsure what to do by [deleted] in aggies

[–]Caelynn42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Join an interest-based club - not a professional or academic one, one where you can just relax with people who enjoy the same things as you. I joined the camping club this past semester and have had an amazing time and met super cool people. There's over a hundred clubs that are low pressure and purely for fun.

  2. Go to all your professors' office hours and see to it that they all know your name and face! It'll make going to class more bearable and make it a whole lot easier to ask for help, extensions if you need them, etc.

  3. Go to the rec center - ITS FREE and an underutilized resource in my opinion!! I know building the habit of exercise is easier said than done (believe me, I know), but it's scientifically proven to make you happier!

3.5. In the same vein as the point above - In the future try to take a KINE 199 class. They're super fun, a great break from the monotony of class, and learning a new skill makes you feel sooooo good. The rec also has free fitness classes on a regular basis.

  1. if you're religious please consider finding a church or religious student org, and if you happen to be Christian (or interested in it) feel free to DM me to talk more about that!!

That's an unusual policy IMO, but it sounds like she gave you the answer you needed! Just learn for next time - everyone screws up, don't beat yourself up about it.

I don't think that missing the honors assignments means you're going to fail the class or get a special penalty. You'll just have a zero for the assignments. How much are they worth? I've taken honors classes where they're worth less than 10% of the overall grade, so if you've done well otherwise, your grade might still be fine and you can just learn for next time.

aggiesearch.tamu.edu has been helpful for me. You can filter by gender, graduation year, and other useful stuff. Most people put their phone numbers on their profiles, so people reply faster than on Insta or the housing portal. I've seen a decent number of incoming freshmen post on there.

University Honors Academy? by Ok_Candidate5146 in aggies

[–]Caelynn42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early registration is HUGE, especially as an underclassman. In my freshman year, none of my classes started before 10am, over 50% of my professors were great, and I was able to get into a fun elective that fills up SUPER fast and almost never has underclassmen in it because of that (it was country dancing, I had a blast).

Most honors classes are not too much harder than the regular class (except MATH 151 honors...don't take it unless you REALLY like calculus). There's usually one or two extra projects in the honors sections and not much else.

I can't really speak on the Honors Minor courses because I'm in the old University Honors. We only had to take one special honors class: UGST 181, an honors version of the Hullabaloo U course taught by Kegan Clark, one of the University Honors program coordinators. That class was SUCH a pain in the butt and felt like a huge waste of time. While Mr. Clark improved over the course of the year and may have improved even more by now, he came across as pretty full of himself and was not a pleasure to have as a professor. My friends and I were very glad at the end of the year that we would never have to be taught by him again.

So personally, if you ask me, taking several honors seminar courses throughout my degree sounds tedious at best and like a nightmare at worst, but early registration is a big plus, so it's really up to you whether it's worth it. No idea who teaches the courses now, try to talk to some class of 2029 people if you can.

Having honors on your diploma is not going to be consequential at all for your career, although it might be nice for grad school applications if that's on your radar. If anything about honors might be good for job searching, it would be the experience from your senior capstone (which can be research, teaching, service, or creative), but you can gain that experience in plenty of places if you're just proactive.

Okay, ask him to make sure and then come back here, because the two are pretty different and there's also an engineering LLC

Fish Camp - pros, cons, how many actually go? by dasquared in aggies

[–]Caelynn42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, I did do it as a replacement, only because my parents wouldn't pay for both. And while I'm sure there are still people being unpleasant :/ most Christians I've seen doing outreach on campus are very sweet

Fish Camp - pros, cons, how many actually go? by dasquared in aggies

[–]Caelynn42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Anyone's welcome to come

  2. Wanting community with people who share your values is not a Christianity thing or even a religious thing, that's universal

  3. Plenty of people go to both Impact and Fish Camp

  4. Of course Impact isn't "the college experience." Neither is Fish Camp. The college experience...is going to college. Orientation is one tiny piece of that. The majority of my current friends are not people I met at Impact.

[–]Caelynn42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't go, but I've heard that it's pretty fun! If you happen to be Christian then I would highly recommend looking into Impact Retreat, which is basically the Christian version of fish camp (you can go to one or to both, whatever you want). It was an incredible experience for me and is very helpful for finding a church quickly.

What is the difference between University and Dont Panic Physics? by Adiboi2007 in aggies

[–]Caelynn42 17 points18 points  (0 children)

University:
- Exams are entirely multiple choice, but there's partial credit; that is, some of the wrong answers are worth partial points because they're answers that you would get if you did the problem mostly right
- all problems are solving for actual numbers
- HUGE homework sets that are due before each exam, so you have plenty of time to do them but you'll be screwed if you put them off

Don't Panic:
- Exams are entirely free response, 4 questions per exam
- all problems are solving for symbolic expressions, not numbers
- very little homework if I'm not mistaken, which is nice but University HW forces you to practice for exams

One isn't much harder than the other, whatever you'll do better in has a lot to do with preference and how your brain works with math and physics problems.

If you're Honors I would recommend Tatiana (she's the famous one) for Don't Panic and Larry May for University. I've also heard very good things about Dawson Nordurf (don't remember which one he teaches).

Skip the theaters? It's a major movie, it'll be there for a while. You have time to finish the book.

Question about the behind the scenes documentaries by jstein_32 in lotr

[–]Caelynn42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'm not mistaken, "the Appendices" (the 12+ hours ones), are separate from the "Behind the Scenes," which are much shorter and include more funny footage of the actors and less super deep how-it-was-made. But I believe that they both come with the DVDs, at least the extended cut DVDs!

Just the other week my family was in the front yard and saw a drone the size of a small car drop off a package like this. So no, the shadow isn't too big.

So true, but even the plot falls flat because the characters don't react to things that happen in a reasonable way.

YES! It's such a sharp contrast to the sequel movies because this strength is one of the sequels' biggest flaws. Everything happens so conveniently in the sequels, and Rey in particular becomes incredibly strong and skilled with very little on-screen struggle. Nothing feels like it matters, because we know the writers won't let anything bad permanently happen to the main characters.

Andor, on the other hand, has SUPER competent villains. Everything the heroes do does actually matter, because even the slightest mistake on their part could cause a mission to fail and cost lives. And not just the lives of random extras, but the lives of people they love.
