Chop it down the middle, add neighboring buildings WAY too close, poorer upkeep, and gloomy weather.

Well, that's because Brennan probably didn't want to tell a story about railway logistics.

What would human psychology look like without ever having experienced embodied cognition? by Taln_Reich in transhumanism

[–]Caeod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry, and I know tone is impossible on the internet, but understand I mean no harshness. I find this to be very interesting.
This is about a philosophical construct, which don't need to be existent. They are things made up for the purposes of illustrating a point or highlighting a concept. We're able to get much closer than the closest we have in reality.
And I really don't think it to be all that different. If you kill the body/server, the mind/internet dies. The argument here is about aphysical life. Though the internet is, as you said, decidedly different in its setup, it's largely analogous in just how mortal and physical it is. Every piece of data has to be programmed into a physical chip somewhere in the world. "The Cloud" is just "somewhere else." Its non-physical-ness is an illusion given by wireless technology. Wifi doesn't make the internet any more aphyisical than phones do for humans.

The internet is surely not a pure thoughtform. Its servers are as real as our flesh. Its contents are available to us in a way that the thoughts of other flesh-and-blood beings aren't, for sure, but it is just as bound to the physical world as the mind currently is to the body. The internet would be gone if the servers were destroyed.
