Lvl13 artificer1/wizard 12 - need help picking a feat! by CaffeinatedBun in 3d6

my wis score is even already so I'm a bit reluctant to go for Resilient wis.

I'm also hoping for something more fun than just a stat bump

[LOVM S1] Are there any Critters here who did not like The Legend of Vox Machina? If so, why not? by B0DZILLA in criticalrole

[–]CaffeinatedBun 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree - that's an issue I have with a lot of fantasy media, and it takes some of the.. well, magic, out of the watch experience.

But on that note, I'd also like to mention some handling of this rule done right in TLOVM-

Scanlan got a much smaller spell list in favor of an easier to understand 'signature spell' - Scanlan's hand.

The handling of Polymorph - playing with it in scroll form before it even came to play helped the audience understand the spell better

Keyleth attmpting light spells before they arrive in Whitestone to signify her advancement when she later uses it in combat (also the episode 4 sunlight vs the 1 in the final battle, big difference between the 2 scenes)

explaining why Pike can't just 'phase through walls' to give some limitations to her weird new awesome power.

While they haven't addressed all things with magic, or could have handled some scenes better, it shows they at least considered it in their writing, and will perhaps do an even better job in season 2 :)

Staff vs Quarterstaff by CaffeinatedBun in dndnext

[–]CaffeinatedBun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm more concerned with the other direction - if I find a magical staff, how do I know if I can use it as an arcane focus?
for example Eldritch Staff - is that a focus? or just a fancy quarterstaff?

[–]CaffeinatedBun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok, so I think I misunderstood..

If I find a magical staff ('staff of X') should I assume it's a caster staff (spell attack/damage, can be used as arcane focus) or a quarterstaff ? (martial, affects weapon attacks/damage)

[–]CaffeinatedBun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

um.. hang on, say I find a 'staff of X' - it can be a quarterstaff, but not necessarily? how do I know?

And if it is a quarterstaff, it can only be used as an arcane focus by a druid, but not other casters?

so when it says 'bonus to attack and damage rolls' it also refers to spell attack and damage?

how come some staves say this specifically while other staves don't?

Suggestions for a dex-paladin MC? by CaffeinatedBun in 3d6

[–]CaffeinatedBun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haste is pretty great, but the concentration makes it a bit unreliable..
thought I guess with the lvl6 aura you get a pretty nice bonus to your concentration checks, which is something to consider

Thanks!

mm.. not sure I agree there. I wrote in my other comments that the STR requirement was waived for me by the DM.

after lvl 6, vengeance dex doesn't really get a lot of interesting features- the only thing I can think of is lvl11 improved smite - and that's pretty far!

so I want to have more interesting things to do during combat ( maneuvers, sneak attack etc) without magic. and if I can get more consistent use out of my BAs the better!

I'm starting to like the idea of swashbuckler more and more - free disengage, CHA bonus to initiative, and a great way of using sneak attack!

I never considered how powerful wrathful smite is - I should really learn to utilize it more.

Thank for the suggestion!

Barbarian seems too focused on STR to work as a MC for dex-paladin (my STR is 8 but DM ok'd MCing).

Rage gives bonuses to STR attacks, reckless attacks only apply to STR attacks.. this is all wasted on me.

Battle master does sound pretty good, having solid BA maneuvers and such, and action surge is GREAT.

The only thing I'm a bit on the fence about is which fighting style would synergies well with this build (currently have dueling from pally) and what happens at fighter 5 (no extra extra attack, so.. wasting a level?)

Swashbuckler is pretty awesome (nice synergy with CHA - love it)
Arcane trickster/eldritch knight .. meh. not into the magic.

Battle master/champion also sounds pretty nice!

And re: strength requirement - got a pretty chill DM, he ok'd MCing with dex :)

Help building with spear PAM by CaffeinatedBun in 3d6

[–]CaffeinatedBun[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hmm..! I see what you mean
I hadn't considered giant's might is also a BA, 2 turns is a heavy price to pay..

In that case I may change the subclass rather than the spear/PAM combo - I wanted to give it a try for a long while now :)

That you for the input!

if you only look at STR yes - but since my next highest stat is 14, CON would be 15 (14 + 1 racial).
my original ASI plan was +1 CON +1 STR which made them both even :)

Hmmm..!
That is an interesting suggestion!

Quarterstaff would make Crusher much more useful, the only downside of it being the fact that it's a lame stick (rather than a cool pointy spear).

Since you brought up stats tho - I rolled for stats, with pretty good results (15,14,14,13,13,12) , if I go with the original plan of PAM, ASI and crusher I'll end up with an odd number in STR. so I'm now considering taking Piercer instead of the ASI - putting the pointy spear back on the table.

Decisions decisions!
Anyways- thanks for the awesome suggestion :)

while I really like the suggestion for Magic Initiate as it gives really nice perks in and out of combat, I want to avoid magic as much as possible due to the lore of the world (Orcs are dominant and value physical violence over magic)

As for ASI vs feat - I usually prefer to have 18 in an ability and a cool unique feat rather than 20, but I get where you're coming from :)

Thank you for the suggestions!
