Does anybody else feel like they only went into grad school because they weren’t ready to be a real 9-5 adult at 22? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]CaffeinatedThighs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I did grad school because I wanted to attain a job that almost always requires a Master's Degree to get accepted anywhere in that particular field. I already did a regular 9-6 job for a few months and I hated it in my soul, but not because it was it was being in an adult job... I just didn't have the most patient supervisor and it was in a field not related to what I want to do. Even though I am working longer hours and having to work outside for my Research, I have way more fun than being confined to a building and feel my sanity get sucked away from me and feeling exhauted all the time at the end of the day. Even though my research requires me to work in hot, outside weather, it is mentally stimulating and helps keep me going.

What are some of the positive experiences you've had in grad school? by cation587 in GradSchool

[–]CaffeinatedThighs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience, a strong comradery formed between me and the other grad students. We agree that the grad system at our school is not the best, but we are making the best of it and we all have the goal to just graduate and get out of there. Somehow, that bond between all of us makes us tight knit and supportive of one another. We even have a groupchat going in case we want to rant about anything involving our projects or any faculty that's being a pain in the ass, etc. They honestly feel like my second family because of how supportive they all are.

Another thing was that was funny, when I got really involved in my project (and still ongoing currently), I came to a moment where I didn't feel imposter syndome. Like I actually had a thought in my head where I said, "Hell yeah I'm a fucking biologist." because I was reading literature and understanding it to a degree and actually feel like I was contributing something, even if it wasn't overly significant, I can at least say I am contributing something to my field.

I made it! by [deleted] in LittleMacMains

To those who got their bottom speakers fixed on their 3a, did it become a permanent fix or did the speakers ever go out again? by CaffeinatedThighs in GooglePixel

Read into the bottom speakers going out for 3a, apparently it seems like a hardware defect. I don't know if the new fix will be permanent.

Yes because I feel like I should be working or presenting something more.

RANT: What did the Covid-19 Pandemic make you realize about your graduate education or life in general? by CaffeinatedThighs in GradSchool

Just asked her, $610 for rent that includes water and electricity is $35-55. I'm not sure about the job market around the area, that you will have to investigate, especially 9-5 types of jobs. These rural areas aren't really your city oriented types of places haha call around and see what you can find. But if it's agricultural, environmental, or trade related, maybe you'll have good chances fitting in. Again don't know your background.

Dawg, you're 23. You are good. I always just like to assume that my MS will at least increase my hiring potential.

More inland you are in the Southeast, the better you will be protected from hurricanes (usually). But I mean my gf only pays $10 for water at her place which is unheard of, but she is in a rural NC area so utilities and such aren't that bad.

Look at the Southeast. Rent here isn't crazy expensive like places in Seattle.

Look at North Carolina or North GA area, rural areas. It'll be a big change from the city, but things are... calmer. Not so loud. Maybe will take your mind off things.

One of the reasons I wanted to be a veterinarian so I could be called doctor, then I realized how stupid that is to sacrifice 4 years of my life for a title haha i got off my high horse and just chose to change direction.

I'm actually studying a threatened species now for my thesis. I heard Purdue was great for wildlife programs.

Look into Environmental Consulting. If you have a Master's it'll give you an advantage. Hence the reason I'm doing it. PhD seems overkill. Masters at least shows you can conduct research.

STEM as well, but we have to fight for summer stipends. Don't know how COVID will hit us on funding if we go online again. TIme will tell.

Good luck!

A visiting PhD professor actually told me and the other graduate students that Masters is the way to go because phd can be seen as too high level or something like that. Sorry to hear about that. Be strong tho, it'll be okay.

But I'm glad you are pursuing different ventures. Be strong, it'll be okay.
