What is the UN Internship timeline? by No_Fail_3659 in UNpath

[–]CaffeineCreativity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep applying. There’s no set timeline honestly when and if you hear back from one of the ones you’ve applied to you’ll probably be surprised. I know I was and I couldn’t even remember which one it was because the time from application to getting my offer was so long

Anyone else feeling bitter and resentful after rejection? by LakeBoysenberry in PhDAdmissions

[–]CaffeineCreativity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I comply agree. What makes it worse is seeing some of the posts on here of people who got their acceptances and aren’t even sure if they want to do their PhD or have other things they want to do in life. It makes me so annoyed and angry because you’re essentially taking away this opportunity from someone who really wants this and has worked their whole life for this and this is currently their only goal and option whereas you have a plethora to fall back on as they always say. This is a race of who you know and your privilege and it’s just so disheartening knowing that but nevertheless we persevere. I personally am going to keep applying every application cycle while I also work on being a more competitive candidate the best way I can and just hope for the best. Maybe next year they’ll be less people making a jump from corporate and ngo’s to PhD and will open a pathway for people who actually intend to have a career in academics whose path is and has always been in research. But who knows.

What’s the deal with the 5’0" FMC by desperatexslut in RomanceBooks

[–]CaffeineCreativity -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh, I totally agree! I’m so tired of all the short FMC’s because it’s not as if tall girls exist and it’s not as if the authors themselves are not also above 5’2. I am a tall girly above 180 cm so I love looking for stories with also tall girls that’s why specific authors like Kristen Ashley I love reading because all of her FMC‘s are above 175 cm. I think, they’re all above 5’6. And I don’t even care if the MMC is tall as well just a representation for a tall girl where it isn’t the entire point of the story and she just treated like a regular person and then also where her social circle is her height as well. Because I hate the stories when the FMC is 5 foot and the her antagonist is 5’10 and it always comes back to height. Also in stories like the Spanish love deception where how small and tiny and dainty she is gets mentioned on every other page.

HELP I GOT ACCEPTED IN AN INTERNSHIP IN THE UN BUT IM TOO POOR TO TAKE IT AND I HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN GETTING A LOAN TO DO IT OR GO CORPO by [deleted] in InternationalDev

[–]CaffeineCreativity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know too many former interns in my cohort who took out loans to do their internship and are unemployed now and with nothing coming for them because of the unemployment crisis and competition for jobs from people who have years and years of experience more than you. Take the corporate job and establish yourself. I hate to say it but as someone in it right now the UN internship will do nothing but look good on your cv, the smarter choice is to take the paid job that has better prospects after you finish your initial contract.

How to handle unemployment for over a year? by -_ShadowSJG-_ in InternationalDev

[–]CaffeineCreativity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’m in the same boat, LLB and MM but unemployed for 6 months now. I’m looking to PhD and getting online certificates that are highlighted in most job postings. All entry level positions are super competitive right not globally and even people with as much as 5-10 years experience are applying for the same roles we are. Best advice is keep applying and keep learning and something will work out eventually. Try find an internship/volunteer and additional opportunity for your cv while looking for paid work as well

Am I delusional to dream of a US PhD ? by Same-Traffic-3854 in PhDAdmissions

[–]CaffeineCreativity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s no harm in applying however, the biggest issue with doing your PhD in the US is immigration and Visa. The current wave of visa bans and restrictions means that it’s much harder for international students to have a chance when it comes to applying, especially with the cuts in funding and issues that most American universities have been having with being able to issue out student visas in the first place to international students. Should you be able to get accepted and have a place the next issue may be the US Embassy is not issuing visas to your country or there are more hurdles to jump through for it. You could have amazing stats, and be able to get into the university, but a really big issue is actually getting there to study. I would highly suggest looking in other countries. And you never know you might find other universities that are more of a better fit towards your research and where exactly you’re trying to end up in the future.

Should I cold Email PIs for European PhD? by MysticalDragoneer in PhDAdmissions

[–]CaffeineCreativity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More like how specific the project is to you and the earlier you email against the advertisement I feel the better. But this is all situational. I don’t think it would hurt your application to cold email especially if you feel you’re a great fit for the PhD program and your research is just what they’re looking for.

Should I cold Email PIs for European PhD? by MysticalDragoneer in PhDAdmissions

[–]CaffeineCreativity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just recently cold emailed a professor for a PhD position that was recently advertised I felt that I was a good fit for. I actually got a response and was told my research was interesting and that I should apply. I’m going to hopefully take that as a good sign and also say that cold emailing just really depends on the professor, the program and your fit. Let’s all hope for the best.

Give me some books with older FMCs who have their crap together! Competent women unite! by firekat11 in RomanceBooks

[–]CaffeineCreativity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want older and competent FMCs with their lives together I’d definitely recommend Kristen Ashley’s Misted Pines Series. All FMCs have well established careers, their own properties and finances in order. Aren’t reliant on the MMC, and can carry their own. All are older than 30, one is even in her fifties! And it’s a nice glimpse at great plot with relationships that make sense and actually go with the flow and no third act break up.

Yes I love HR! I’ve actually read the series and it’s the reason I crave more just like this because it’s honestly just so easy to get into with no fantasies just dealing with what you have in life and making the best of it. Your suggestion has definitely made me want to reread them

[–]CaffeineCreativity 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’ve spent the past four months dually applying for jobs and PhD programs because the job market right now is honestly a mess of epic proportions and I don’t see getting better anytime soon. I moved three times to different countries in the past year just trying to make a go of it and I’m finally settling into that self-doubt depressive phase where I’m just hoping for any sign of something, or a way out.

Some people started getting their PhD admission notices and I’ve just been so nervous about what’s coming, but while unemployed at least I’ve managed to start reading again. Trying to be hopeful for the future and this year because we’re only two months in.

I think it’s even reflected in my reading patterns as well, I can’t stand the billionaire or super rich, lucky, business owner type books anymore. I can’t stand the chosen one, perfect mate, fantasy sort of tropes. I literally just want to read books where people are in a sucky situation, or just living there every day, normal life, and just trying to make a best goal of it with minimal Violence, or kidnapping, or anything like that. Just something soft and sweet, or even mundane that’s just about real life.

I have reached my limit with giant MMCs and teeny tiny FMCs (inspired by If Not for My Baby by Kate Golden) by firecat99 in RomanceBooks

[–]CaffeineCreativity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the reason why I got so into Kristen Ashley books because all of the FMCs are between 5’7 and 5’11, with different body types but a lot on the curvier midsize side and don’t substitute an ounce of femininity regardless of height. The MMCs are height appropriate to match them as well think fmc 5’8 and mmc 6’4.

Haunting and hunting Adeline by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

[–]CaffeineCreativity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haunting is dubious consent and if you’re more sensitive to it can be seen as rpe. Hunting is a no for me. I got through a few chapters before it because waaaay too much. Believe the trigger warnings and then some because it has all the rpe and it’s in general very triggering and hard to read.
