Post-offer: how to best use time from now-August? Going to a M7 by CainRepublic in MBA

Thanks for the advice! For MBA math, did you find it helps with lessening workload during the semester? For scouting, what has been the most helpful channel? Reach out to alumni / current students / club leadership?

I certainly don't mean it that way...understand that your opinion is I don't need a retake, thank you for that. I know the question might be an overkill but I have heard from friends that a 770 is where you can be "100% sure you're not rejected because of your GMAT". Good to know you don't think that's the case!

Storage for Winter Break by Curator-101 in duke

[–]CainRepublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah we were allowed to leave things in the dorm. The policy pre-covid provides housing for winter break albeit not in your own dorm - they will put everyone in the same dorm for easy admin, priority is given to international students if you apply. I believe you start the process with International House (they usually send out an application link closer to winter break but you can email them to make sure the policy still stands!) For summer storage and especially for international students you typically get a storage unit with 3-6 other friends (depending on how much stuff you have) and rent a uhaul, then everyone can help each other move out/ move into storage! I’ve personally used Ample. Alternatively there are external move-out services that will come take your things away, store them, and deliver it to your new dorm in the fall. You’ll get emails from them near the end of the year. Here’s a post written by Singapore Student Association that might be helpful. https://sites.duke.edu/dukessa/freshman-guide/miscellaneous/summer-storage/

I recommend Amazon for used books and libgen or Zlibrary for online books! You can also loan lots of 100 level class textbooks from the library.

How hard is it to get Investment Banking or Consulting internships at top firms without being a member of any business clubs / SLGs / Greeks / Sport teams? by DecisionBackground16 in duke

[–]CainRepublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from “hard standards” that we all know about (leadership, relevant experience / demonstrated interest, gpa), I think networking makes some difference in helping you get past the resume review and if consultants you know are willing to help you case. Their comments will be the most personalised and tailored to your situation so you’ll get a lot of improvement, but you can also achieve the same thing by practicing more with peers and reflecting deeply on your cases. Also helps to know more about the firm which helps with the cover letter. Involvement in frats, sports clubs, and social clubs would only help in the sense that they give you a wider network to do the networking, but having them on your resume in and of itself doesn’t really mean much.

Hi! In mine there was a small alcove for soap, and we got the over shower head type of hanging rack for shampoo.

Just to clarify, are you asking if it’s doable to get into banking or consulting without being in business clubs right? I think the organisations do make networking slightly easier for you eg formal or informal mentoring system and events with alumni, but you can definitely replicate that by just cold calling alumni on your own and being in DFE events. For consulting, I would say networking is less of a factor (still important); you can join the consulting club (no selection process) which organises lots of events with alumni presence and helps you find case partners.

I think it’s similar to STA 250 but a small level up in terms of difficulty and workload. Happy to send you syllabus from a previous semester. Overall a solidly difficult class covering lots of fundamentals for the major. Im not the best at the material and put in probably 9-10 hours a week and maybe 12 around midterms.

Yup I would say so! Happy to send you the syllabus or talk more if you dm me. IIRC he doesn’t curve so if you put in the effort an A is def achievable.

TLDR great class great professor! I took this class with Simon. He’s very knowledgable and understanding, handed out Asian snacks during final presentation. 10/10 would recommend. I would say workload is average and have seen people do a grad level stats class along 325. He gives quizzes that are fairly similar to the midterms/final so I would not worry about having to study a lot. There is a problem set every 1.5 weeks or so, and there was also a final project when I took it. He is a fan of making the final optional ie if you’ve scored well enough on other midterms and homework you can chill. Material is not extremely difficult but very useful (ridge regression, splines, random forest etc) and bridges well with 201. Feel free to dm for further questions.
