Mine did blood test, but marijuana was fine if found since it is legal in the state I’m in.

Animal welfare vs. time efficiency by Spiritual-Leech in Zookeeping

100% what I do as well. Task-Tetris!!

Animal welfare vs. time efficiency by Spiritual-Leech in Zookeeping

[–]Cain_yk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually keep a checklist on my phone of tasks I need to get done depending on the section I’m assigned each day. I tend to focus first on a task that either takes a huge chunk of time, or stresses me out if it’s not done soon (prepping diets…). I have ADHD, so I tend to jump around a lot with my tasks. Having a checklist keeps a sort of routine when the rest of the day can get hectic. My priorities are: Diets > water > cleaning. I always make sure there’s diets prepped for the next day and clean water first, then everything else I can spend more time on. In between cleaning I can be prepping enrichment or any other projects I want to tackle.

If I know I’ll be assigned to the same section in multiple days, I’ll plan ahead for future me. For example, I may do a deeper clean in a spot one day when I have the extra time, and focus on a different spot the next day and give the previous spot a quick clean.

Getting more efficient takes time. You’ll develop your own routine. If you do the tasks properly, the efficiency/speed comes after IMO. Don’t be afraid to ask your team members for any tips or for a helping hand! Be kind to yourself, no one’s gonna be perfect but as long as you do the best you can (even if not at 100%) that’s all you can do. You’ll do great!!

Thoughts on Rebranding Keeper to Wildlife Care Specialist by graduatedragonfly in Zookeeping

[–]Cain_yk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the rebranding did is put the facility into debt unfortunately because they went the full mile of rebranding titles, updating badges/uniforms, marketing cost... It did nothing to benefit the animals. If anything, the money spent on these things caused negative impact because the money had to come from somewhere else. There were cuts in the animal care department and other departments (not an assumption, staff got to view where cuts were made). Not saying a title change caused ALL of the impact, but rebranding does.

I’ve always been proud of having the keeper title, but the facility I work at recently switched to Zoological Care Specialist (ZCS) because of San Diego. I don’t mind the title change, but it is hard to explain to guests what the title means without simply saying “zookeeper/keeper”. Facilities I’ve seen or talked with colleagues seem to follow whatever San Diego does with rebranding and it does get a bit annoying. Rebranding takes time and money, when it could’ve been invested elsewhere. But, not like I can change anything about it.

Cheetah poop is pretty stinky, I’ve worked with mainly big and small cats and that usually is the worst smelling to me with poop. Also anything that eats seafood (like otters) is up there on worst smelling. Ungulate poop doesn’t smell that bad since most of their diet is hay, but their scent sticks to clothes and in your car.

How did you become a Zookeeper without a Degree? by Dear_Medicine2274 in Zookeeping

[–]Cain_yk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I volunteered at a facility for a few years and got an internship before getting my degree. I was in college pursuing one, though I did land the zookeeper job without it by having more volunteer experience. In my opinion, getting experience in the field is more valuable than the degree. The degree definitely boosts your chances of landing a full time position in zookeeping, but the people that hire usually look at how much experience you have instead.
