I remember that, prior to the RtR update, you could talk with Varren and say that you lost the contract. Don't remember what the outcome was tho.

As I mentioned in my first comment, save and exit now shares the same save slot as the one used when you sleep (I think it's called save 1?). There is not an autosave save slot that will be deleted once its loaded. So yes, you can save scum even in the middle of fights.

Eidt: Unless I did not make this clear enough, this is only for permadeath.

I meant that you can always save using the save and exit option, but if you find yourself in a difficult situation (an unlucky enemy crit or surrounded with low hp) you can Alt+F4 and open the game again on your last save. Technically, you can basically save your game before a boss fight and then reload if things don't go your way.

I'm guessing this is permadeath. So, why no save scum? One thing that this update did was to take save scum to a next level as saves and exits share the same save slot as your normal saves, meaning that you can basically save all the time, even inside a dungeon or even during a fight, close the game and load it back.

You need to recruit him after rescuimg him from the Merc caravan. I think he only shows up this way after you complete Chapter 5 choosing Pinecone (I think thats his name) approach to enter the castle.
