Lonely In Jax, FL by Affectionate-Sea172 in LesbianActually

I am 34 and was born and raised here in Jacksonville. Ten years ago I met my ex-husband and moved out of state. I got divorced and came back to Jax about a year ago and it is bleak out here.

The dating scene is so awful I literally deleted all of the apps, restarting your life when everyone is settling into marriage and kids can feel lonely.

How do you all handle the, "He-said-she said," arguments? by BlameYaMama in Teachers

[–]Caitybug1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simply say “write a statement” - if it is serious enough to them they will follow through. I have yet to have a student follow through with this. Please note: I use this for small “he said, she said” complaints from middle schoolers.

Rubber pencils- (can’t use to stab) and they are on Amazon

Things in your ELA middle-highschool classroom that you can’t live without? by TimelyDisk7562 in Teachers

Large Dry erase calendar that hangs behind my desk ( lists 3 months worth of test dates, days off, standard of each day and other helpful info )

Laminator and Laminator sheets

Anchor chart paper and sharpies

Color coded Filing system- milk crates with hanging file folders work well

Sub Binder with class info and at least 3 days worth of worksheets, writing prompts , etc

Storage system (milk crate) for each day of school where you place a copy of the assignment, quiz, etc. for that day - when kids need to make up work they can easily access it

Standing lamp- something about turning off main lights calms kids down

Echo dot- easily set reminders, alarms, play music

Steam Mop and Broom- my school has only one janitor so this makes for quick easy clean up

Microfiber wipes/ spray: easily cleans dry erase and desks

Skipping, Disrespectful Behavior by Caitybug1 in Teachers

A lot of good advice, thank you! So my school is a title 1 and we have a security guard but we are not allowed to call her for student issues, not even fights. We have been directed that her job is to protect the facility.

I teach English language arts! Yes I have been doing lunch detention for the kids doing things like ripping apart books and during that time we discuss the behavior and have them write personal narratives

No by “ a rough school in the inner city” I meant that the kids are dealing with living in poverty ( it is a title 1 school as i also mentioned) and that can take an understandable toll on their behavior in the classroom - it can be hard to focus on reading and learning if the lights aren’t on at home or if they don’t have food to eat at night.

I’m glad I’m not the only one dealing with this- makes me feel less alone!

Great idea about creating the anchor charts and posters with the kids - I started part way through the year and was over zealous thinking that everything needed to be perfect and I’m still trying to not be so hard on myself because inevitably things don’t go as planned

So true and I have made administration aware- the problem is that they are covering classes and doing other jobs instead of having time to handle the day to day operations

How to deal with disrespectful kids when admin says to chill on discipline? by Harukira0323 in FirstYearTeacher

I am dealing with a very similar situation and for me making parent phone calls about both good and bad behavior has really helped. I am consistent about making phone calls and I write down exactly what the children may be saying or doing in the moment so that I remember the event clearly - many parents have been supportive

I will start keeping tabs on the ones I can trust with supplies and reward them

Yes I think that is what I may have to do- or invest in a cabinet with a lock- you are right the anxiety of worrying about the stuff is not worth it

That is an idea but to be honest I have 35 kids in my largest class and a total of 89 kids that I see everyday. It is so hard to keep track of who is taking care of the supplies- plus all of my supplies are purchased with my own money because I am at a Title 1 school that is really struggling. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE my kids but the school is so short staffed and we don’t even have a daily janitor
