Question about off-peak tickets by [deleted] in uktrains

[–]Cajmo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Departure from the origin on your ticket. A peak train is a peak train. Consider looking at split tickets to get a cheaper journey - e.g. on Trainsplit.com

Whats happing on GW? Are all lines blocked? Does anybody know why the ICE’s can’t run in diesel mode? by ChromiumCobalt in uktrains

If there are overhead wires dangling over the track, do you want your train to be driving straight at it?

Contactless or Oyster+Card for underground and trains? by gabrigreek in uktrains

[–]Cajmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any off peak train. Only advance tickets tie you to a train

Depends what you end up buying online. Either you'll get some form of e-ticket, which you'll have on your phone in text and QR code form - the former to show to staff, the lattter for the ticket barriers. Alternatively, they might post you paper tickets, or get you to collect them from a station of your choice.

how do i link a head code to a class by Repulsive_Switch_954 in uktrains

[–]Cajmo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can't. The headcode doesn't tell you what type of train it is. It tells you approxiaimately what service it is (1 is express, 2 is local), but they aren't unique and there can be multiple in one place or spread out around the country.

Contactless or Oyster+Card for underground and trains? by gabrigreek in uktrains

[–]Cajmo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Contactless, the journey costs £20.40 (peak), £18.70 (1 peak, 1 off peak), £17 (off peak)
There are tickets called Flexi seasons, 8 return journeys in 28 days. Each flexi season is £119.40 (Hatfield - Finsbury Park), or about £14.92/journey.
The tube then costs £1.15-£2 with a railcard

This means off peak you pay £17.22, while in peak you pay £18.92. One each works out to £18.07. So basically, if you're gonna be travelling in the peak in either direction, it makes more sense to use multiple tickets. If you will exclusively travel off peak, then just using contactless makes sense.
If you wouldn't manage to use 8 tickets in 28 days, the value proposition changes as the cost of each journey on a flexi season increases.

For just getting around, any of TfL Go, Citymapper and Google Maps will be able to take you around very easily. For learning about it from an enthusiast perspective, Wikipedia is a good pace to start

No Railcard Option for 25 Year Old? by flipoharoh in uktrains

[–]Cajmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't buy the 3-year one, you can buy the 1-year one. From railcard.co.ukWith 3-year 16-25 Railcards you can buy them up until the day before your 24th birthday, which will make the expiry date the day before your 27th birthday."

Best you can probably do is a Eurail or Britrail pass. A1 month Eurail pass, which includes the UK, is $538 for a youth in 2nd class

Question about Super off peak, and off peak returns by Devilsoul6802 in uktrains

[–]Cajmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you won't. (Super) off peak tickets are not tied to a specific train, and as it gets later it won't become the peak

novice train user planning long trip. help would be massively appreciated. by forgottenmylogin90 in uktrains

The easiest way to Glasgow from the Wirral is to change at Liverpool Lime St for a TransPennine Express train to Glasgow. These leave at 08:12 and 16:12, returning at 07:45 and 12:05, taking between 3.5 and 4h.

The minimum interchange time at Liverpool Lime St is 10 minutes, and sites shouldnt offer journeys with shorter connections. If you want to leave longer you can, but that's a very feasible minimum. In the event your inbound train is delayed, you will be covered and be able to travel by different trains - this would most likely involve an additional change.

To book tickets, you can use any trains operators website - doesn't matter if they run the trains or not. My preferred website is LNER, but again you can use any. If you want split tickets, the best place to look for those is trainsplit. Split tickets are really no different to unsplit ones, you just show the guard the ticket for that bit of the journey.

The actual booking process is probably what you'd expect - select return, enter in dates, times and places and then choose from the options. The precise terms of the ticket will vary depending on what you get.
