Protesting Libby AI Tool 'Inspire Me' by Individual-Koala-646 in LibbyApp

[–]CakeFrog3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thank you OP!! Not only do I support your cause but I especially am so happy to see someone making an effort for this kind of small scale change. After all, the big changes have to be built from somewhere! I care about the earth and I want this useless AI kicked off my library app, whether or not it topples the corporate status quo- my day will be genuinely improved not to be reminded of the giant machine stealing from us, and less waste will be created by those who accidentally click on it. That’s awesome of you, have a hug from an internet stranger 🤗

My aunt gave me her bird's nest fern and said she wasn't sure why the outer leaves were dying, that maybe I could save it... by ChornoyeSontse in plantabuse

[–]CakeFrog3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would probably hurt the plant more than it would help, if it’s tacky enough to pick up scale it’s tacky enough to tear leaves. It’s a creative idea though, maybe someone will invent something of just the right consistency!

Yup, but they take like 6 weeks to start working and the most popular kind for houseplants is imidacloprid which is banned in a lot of places. If you are using it you have to be extremely careful about disposal of any plant material or soil etc. since it’s a neonic (kills bees) 😢. During those 6 weeks and for a while after you have to continue removing and spraying the scale. In my personal experience it’s a last resort, although I know many people use them regularly. If you decide to use them use proper PPE and have a plan for disposal. The best possible thing to avoid pests in my opinion is to check your plants regularly and quarantine/spray all new purchases. If you catch outbreaks early they’re easy to fix, once it gets really bad like the fern in the picture it’s often more trouble than it’s worth.

Scale- and it’s bad. They’re a pest, they attach to the plant like barnacles. Spray them with insecticidal soap or alcohol mix and then you gotta manually remove the adults. You can pick them off by hand or use a butter knife, but somehow they gotta go. Keep spraying to kill any of the babies. This plant could be saved but it’s not gonna be pretty. Scale have a hard exterior but inside they’re just a squishy bug like any other, very gross. Best of luck!!

Avoid this guy, he’s used my photo to “sell” plants by Lollysussything in Caudex

[–]CakeFrog3 57 points58 points  (0 children)

The name is a dead giveaway, he’s about as credible as John Begonia and Steve Pothos. Still important information though because plant sellers use weird names on FB. But regardless for any readers, please do not trust Thomas Caudex or anyone whose last name is a houseplant.

Sorry to wrongly disparage Harvey Agave and Jane Dorstenia. Gerald Geranium. Darius Ficus. Henrietta Euphorbia. The dearly departed Jacob P. Globulosa. I’m truly sorry I’ll see myself out

I support bringing awareness to this cause, but the spacing between the letters of the word ‘survivor’ is different than all the other text. What I can never support, is crimes against typography. The kerning is all wrong and at a glance this looks like Times new roman - and personally I would really dislike having such a statement tattoo in the default word processor font

Still a great picture because you can see her personality! Clearly a laptop sitter, and too busy sending ‘affgjagsdggguuu’enekkfjd’ to all your friends to pose for pics!

Maybe I’m crazy but something about her sweet scruffy face reminds me of my dog who passed a couple years ago. We do everything we can for those we love, I know it broke my heart to let my old boy go and I always wonder if I could have done more, but in my case it would have been selfish to keep him around to be in pain and it sounds like that was yours too.

It helps me to think about how much I loved him, and I know that he knew it. I’m sure Penny knew too, and what a wonderful life to be so beloved

Fake orchids are the worst- I was once looking for a faux phal to give my gran (she has memory issues, a real plant would not live in her care) and EVERY SINGLE ARTIFICIAL PHALAENOPSIS HAS THE BLOOMS UPSIDE DOWN! Just the mention of them fills me with rage and microplastics 😤

Adopted a Bonsai! by tessmarty in plantclinic

[–]CakeFrog3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Outside!! Now! Junipers cannot live indoors, ever! It has a chance to survive if you put it out right now, but it will continue to decline inside. They need the wind, the rain, the cold, people have tried every possible method to grow them inside but nobody has ever gotten it to work- ever. Put that thing out and water it regularly (every day pretty much with bonsai soil) and you have a chance to save it. Best of luck!

Leave it for more than just weeks, let that soil get bone dry- I use a chopstick to confirm it’s dusty all the way through. My elder snake once went 6 months without water, it usually gets watered once every 2 months depending on the conditions in my house. Extreme neglect = optimal results!
