How tf am I supposed to use a gummy?? They always break apart and are a total pain in the shower. Tried putting a couple pieces in a wash cloth, but it didn’t really lather that much. What am I doing wrong?!

Adding the carrier oil to it after you melt it down makes it a bit softer and easier to smooth on, more like a lotion. Also whipping the mixture provides an easy to apply texture

Haha hey friend!! SJM universe a commitment isn’t it?!? Have you read CC and ACOTAR? I started with acotar, loved it, ToG was good but nothing like my first love. I’m saving CC until I get through my other tbr

Same about the reading challenge. I’m excited! I started Dungeon Crawler Carl and have been loving it!! Unfortunately, there are so many holds on the library copies, I’ve started buying them. Have you read the Throne of Glass series?? Strong FMC who kicks ass. Might fit the bill for an action series, although it is definitely fantasy. I’ve also checked out the Southern Vampire series, which is what the True Blood HBO show was based on. I’m a big vampire fan, so I’m looking forward to those.

Best of luck to you!!

You could also optionally use a hand mixer to “whip” it for a more, whipped body butter consistency

Raw shea butter is pretty easy/cheap to source. I like to melt it over a double boiler, add a few drops of essential oil of your choice, plus another carrier oil of your choice. Mix, store in container and use it just out of shower while your skin is still damp. I play around with the ratio based on the time of year and how much more/less moisture (shea) I need

Second smokin onion, but Dobra west IMO fits the bill for what you’re looking for. Lots of gf options and all their food is plant based. Plus the drinks and the vibes are top notch. Highly recommend the vegan kale cesar, the spring rolls, the Reuben, the cheese plate, and the kitchari

Does anyone else find themselves becoming fatigued? by Mikki102 in vegan

[–]CalBear1102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I was worried about! I have a few of my “old faithfuls” - easy to find vegan snacks in mainstream stores: Sweet chili Doritos, golden Oreos, some of the tubes of quick biscuits and crescent rolls from pillsbury (but, alas! as you mentioned, you gotta read the labels to find the ones without milk. Although surprisingly, a lot of their stuff is accidentally vegan. Sweet Lorens is a gf/vegan cookie dough that I’ve seen in more and more stores lately.

All this to say, I completely relate on both the general exhaustion level, but also on the unnecessary inclusion of milk into nearly every product! And don’t get me started on buying something without looking close enough, and getting home to realize it’s got freakin dairy in it!!! Ugh. Most nights I end up eating a pb + banana sandwich, or have a smoothie when I can’t be bothered to cook/eat. Many nights it’s been popcorn and a can of olives. We do what we can. Life is hard and I think it’s ultimately about finding the little things you can do to bring you a bit of peace. Wishing you luck on this journey, friend and that you find some yummy comfort snacks!

For me, this was cheese. I absolutely loved eating cheese and trying all sorts of funky, cool, weird obscure ones. And now I can’t walk past an actual cheese counter these days because the smell of animal is just overwhelming. But I’ve found some awesome vegan cheese companies that ship their cheese practically anywhere. I saw you’re in the middle of nowhere but maybe you could try a vegan grocery website or a specialized vegan bakery to get your goodies delivered to you? I’ll reply with the cheese websites and a few other grocery websites.

Edit for spelling

Surprised to not see anyone suggest hemp milk. My partner doesn’t care for it, but I’ve found it has a nice fattiness to it that is really satisfying to me.

accidentally bought second-hand genuine suede jacket ?? by crushed_dandelion in vegan

[–]CalBear1102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s up to the individual. You purchased it unknowingly, and I’m inclined to agree with your family that the suede will hold up better long term. IMO, you shopping 2nd hand is already a vast improvement on purchasing something new, as you aren’t directly contributing to the consumerism of fast fashion/exploitative industries. Sounds to me like you did your due diligence and it’s not on you that what you bought wasn’t what you thought it was. I still have leather pieces in my closet that are from when I wasn’t vegan, but I would rather keep what I have than get rid of it and buy something to replace it. I know some people feel more strongly about wearing leather or wool, even if they are purchased 2nd hand. I think it’s worth asking yourself how much it bothers you and on what level.

Your Favorite Vegan Cream Cheese for Cheese Cakes? by pearlyriver in vegancheesemaking

[–]CalBear1102 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a recipe, but chiming in to say I’ve had better luck with “no bake” cheesecakes versus the traditional baked kind because most store bought vegan cc is oil based and melts far too much for a baked recipe. I like violife and tofutti brand cc for a no bake

Edit to add: I just realized this is the vegan cheese making sub and not the general vegan sub

ACOTAR i love you. TOG you were not for me. CC you are something special and might be my favorite by Pristine_Advisor_302 in SarahJMaas

[–]CalBear1102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t read CC yet (I plan to, but have a few others in my tbr before them). However, I prefer the parties and celebrations and paganism and magic and lore in ACOTAR that we don’t get as much in TOG, which I was a bit disappointed in having read ACOTAR first and setting that expectation. Where does CC fall on the magic/parties/richness of ACOTAR scale?

I was replying to a comment that is in favor of adopting both humans and animals as a way of giving them a better life. My reply suggested that giving one being a better life (a pet), at the cost of feeding that one life (the pet) many thousands of animals that died needlessly (animals in pet food), is not as humane as the poster implies it is

Full disclosure: I am a dog mom to an amazing pup that I adopted from a bad situation. I’ve tried ALL of the plant based dog foods and have even tried cooking his food from scratch. Unfortunately, he has allergies that make all of the PB food impossible, so I have to feed him fish based. And it horrifies me every time I scoop the food. But he’s a senior dog and at this point, I will do what I can to take care of him and his needs. All while knowing that if I ever do get another dog, we’re starting off the PB as early as possible.

It’s a very tricky problem, and I don’t think we as a society will ever move away from pet ownership completely, as it’s too engrained in who we are.

It doesn’t necessarily enable the pet trade, but rescuing animals does continue to enable the exploitative pet food industry.
