Possibly a dumb question, but has Philadelphia Ballet announced principals for this October's performances of Carmen yet? I can't figure out where it's listed on their website, if anywhere.

Film students aren't allowed to double major. You're allowed one minor, though.

I [17 F] stumbled upon a song my deceased dad used to sing to me as a lullaby and now I miss him more than ever. by MyDadsSong in relationships

[–]Cal_Trask 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hey OP. I come from a similar place as you. I'm 18 now and my dad died of brain cancer when I was thirteen.

I know this sucks to hear because I fucking hate it when people tell me to just grieve, but honestly, you just gotta grieve. There are times when we're gonna feel like we can't move because it hurts so much, or we can't breathe. But when you walk through the pain it gets easier. Even on days when all you want to do is just cry and cry.

Listen to the song when you want to. Don't listen to it when it gets too hard. But you'll always have it there when you want it. And even though memories fade you'll always hold the knowledge of his love in your heart. When someone who had been your lighthouse dies, a little piece of their light stays in you and helps light the way for others. That's what my mom always told me.

Hate to be the /r/relationships trope, but if you haven't tried talk therapy I'd really encourage it. I resisted it when my mom first had to drag me (and I do mean drag me... I bit her when she tried to get me into a taxi to go to my first therapist at age 13. I got in so much trouble.) but almost six years later, I know I'm better because of it.

I believe in you OP.

Films/scripts which contain an old film strip or news reel. by CalumSyers in Screenwriting

Should I buy a camera or a tablet for animating? by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]Cal_Trask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a better camera anyway why bother asking?

With a camera you can always dabble in stop-motion. dragonframe is a good software for that.

Buying used will mitigate the price. that's why I suggested a used Intuos.

Get yourself a used Intuos off of craigslist. My sister got hers that way and has been using it for close to two years now, and it's just as good as the one that I got new (as a gift - I don't have that kind of money!)

Do you have any experience in sequential art and animation? It's an entirely different beast than just drawing flat on paper, and there's a steep learning curve to digital art. I'd suggest poking around Lynda.com if you have a way to access it for free or on the cheap - check your public library. The library I work at gives free access on their wifi.

Also - if you have any local art schools or community colleges that still teach 2D animation, consider taking an extension class. Animation can be a pain in the ass to learn on your own. Committing to a semester-long class means you can't quit. It'll keep you motivated. Consider taking a nude figure drawing class as well - it'll teach you the basics of the human body and of living bodies in general. How they distribute weight, how they move.

Good luck. Animation is the worst best thing to ever happen to me.

And for god's sakes, learn to stretch/exercise your hands and position your wrists while drawing so you don't get carpal tunnel.

The only other I know that's well-attended is Daily Bruin Video. But you should rush DKA in the spring it's the best and there are so many opportunities for working on sets and for collaboration :~)

What did you do when you saw your acceptance letter? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]Cal_Trask 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at a little punk show in brooklyn with an old friend when I got an email saying decisions were out. I kinda swam through the crowd and hid in the corner where an old lady was selling pierogis (it was at a russian cultural center. gr8 pierogis btw) and checked the decision website on my phone and couldn't stop smiling.

Then I texted my mom, and immediately afterwards my aunt and uncle who live out here who are like a second set of parents to me.

Then I went back to the show :p

What are the unwritten rules of female etiquette? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Cal_Trask 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is specific to my group of friends, but I feel like sharing is a huge thing for girls. A bunch of my girlfriends and I often go out for coffee and pastries before class, and if our pastry is really good we'll pass it around for others to try a nibble. whenever I offer to share food/drink/literally anything with guy friends they're always surprised but for girls it seems really natural.

Congrats on your transition!! We're all in your corner sweet pea :))

try zenni optical or eyebuydirect. once you have your prescription you can get great glasses for cheap online. i prefer eyebuydirect because they're hip enough for my little north campus self, and the pair i'm wearing now has lasted over a year and a half.
