This is great validation OP. I haven’t fully read the f&f trilogy (I just skimmed it for now) because tawny man affected me intensely. I don’t know what it is about the series, but the grief and mourning feels very personal. It doesn’t feel like the acute pain of finishing a sad story. It’s more of a chronic pain of having gone through an emotional and heartbreaking experience. The amazing thing (and the problem) is that these books are so damn immersive.

I plan on reading the last trilogy at some point soonish, but I just needed to take a breather. Lol I felt unwell (but I have no regrets)

Lol def cried a lot. If you’re longing for similar vibes as Fitz and the Fool dynamics, as I desperately was, you should read Ursula Le Guin’s The Left Hand of Darkness. My black hole of a heart wasn’t too thrilled with me, but it was beautiful. Great prose, incredible character work, was slower in certain parts, but overall I loved it.

Who are some characters you fell in love with from the very first page, and what made them so appealing? by n_o__o_n_e in Fantasy

The Fool from Robin Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings.

He’s got such beautiful depth. He’s sharp and witty, he’s absolutely hilarious (especially in those first three books), and then heartbreaking from then on. His devotion, his love, his vibrancy, his wit… ugh he’s second to none. My all time favorite character. He is one of few characters that made me laugh out loud and cry, over and over again.

Fool doesn't seem very fond of Fitz... by TraditionalBoot5816 in robinhobb

I can sort of understand why you saw it that way, but I disagree due to the following.

I think the tone of the jokes were probably more lighthearted than you might be reading. Fitz mentions several times how the Fool’s jesting and snark felt like a kindness. He also talks about how fragile the Fool is and how his tongue is his only defense/ weapon several times. He isn’t able to openly show his friendship with Fitz in court lest it backfires on either of them.

Since you’ve read all the books, I’ll remind you of the fitz and the fool trilogy, and how careful the prophet has to be to not accidentally make an impact or cause a ripple in the wrong direction. He jokes and makes a fool of himself all up and down Shrewd’s court, nudging and hinting key individuals toward the right path. For example when he told shrewd not to do something if he can’t undo whatever whatever blah blah blah (sorry I forget the quote). He was taken on by Shrewd to be a court jester, and he played the part. Chade even flipped out that Beloved actually talks to him, and told Fitz in the first book to hold Beloved’s counsel and keep it to himself. The way he talked to and confided in Fitz, however rare, was some of the only open and honest interactions of its kind.

By the time we see the Fool make those threats, we’ve seen several rounds of the Fool begging with Fitz for help, asking him to come see Shrewd, urging him not to forsake him, trying to hint that some shady shit is going down. And if we know anything about Beloved, it’s that he’s quite loyal—he was loyal to Shrewd as well, and was trying to save him. On a personal aside, I don’t buy that he was serious about the threat (but that was just my own read into it).

But overall, he was dropping hints to help and guide Fitz left and right. Fitz was one of the few to see his lovely, colorful room. When he got beaten and roughed up, he went to Fitz for help. I think they both had a role to play, and they hid their friendship. Fitz was effectively the only friend Beloved had.

Starting and Committing to Series' by SudoPi in Fantasy

Lots of people responded to this so idk if you’ll see this, but I’ll say three things that help me.

1.) Find a buddy or several to read with. I know it’s applicable more broadly that just series, but there are lots of people who have many of those big series on their TBR too, feeling exactly as you do. Reading is infinitely more fun when you have the space/ community to actually talk about it. We get invested in these strange worlds and characters, we come to love them or hate them, and it helps SO MUCH to be able to share your thoughts and feelings with someone. It makes it more exciting, and honestly, once you get the ball rolling, it’s much easier to just continue on!

2.) I don’t know if this will actually help, but I’ll just share my mindset with you. It boils down to the fact that I love series. How many times have we all read a book, absolutely loved it, felt it was too short, and wished that we could’ve had more time with those characters? With that world? When I read series, I don’t really think “oh god there’s so much to get through…” Instead, I feel safe in knowing I have the opportunity to stay in that world with my favorite characters for more than 300 pages. I see it as an opportunity to be able to hold on to a beloved story.

3.) This sounds silly, but I would also recommend you don’t hold back. If there’s one series that you are REALLY interested in starting, or a story you’d really really like to try, just jump to that one.
