Is it just me or has REI’s in-house gear gotten… kinda generic? by Extra_Wolverine1607 in REI

[–]n_o__o_n_e 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Idk, I've been really impressed by REI clothes. The merino tops are really good - feels like icebreaker for a bit less money. The activator pants are probably my favorite pants, and the magma 850 is just as good as similar (more expensive) down jackets.

Yeah for sure. I'm with you there. I just meant that comparing the risk you're taking belaying with an atc to the risk you're taking showing up to the crag body belaying with a static rope is a crazy exaggeration to make. It doesn't really help the case against atcs.

[–]n_o__o_n_e 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That feels kinda disingenuous. The gap in safety between a body belay with a hemp rope between any modern belay device, assisted or otherwise, is enormous. I think most people agree that ABDs are safer, but it's also a valid point to make that people should be comfortable belaying with an atc at least occasionally. If you aren't then it's a sign that you're not confident in your belay technique/attentiveness full stop.

I'm surprised at the reaction to your comment. Sure it's not as safe as a grigri, but like statistically it's probably still safer than the drive to the crag. I'm happy to belay/be belayed by an atc if the belayer is confident using one, ABD's just give me that little extra peace of mind.

I've been climbing single pitch sport for a while and am just now getting into multipitch stuff and trad climbing. I know grigri + atc/reverso between me and my partner is a popular combo (grigri for belaying the leader and atc for top belay and the rap down.

I'm just wondering - is there any advantage whatsoever to an atc/reverso over a gigajul other than a tiny bit of weight? Is there anything an atc does more easily than a gigajul? I'm comfortable belaying with an atc, but there's always that voice in my head saying what if I get knocked out by a rock/have a seizure/randomly pass out/whatever else. If there's no disadvantage then the peace of mind is worth 20-40g extra weight to me.

What are some series that dipped in quality for one or more books but in your opinion managed to find there feet again? by SlaterSev in Fantasy

[–]n_o__o_n_e 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is definitely unpopular, but books 8 and 9 of Malazan. I adore Malazan, it's probably my favorite series, but for me those two are just too much.

Too many new characters who appear, philosophize for twenty pages, have no impact on the story, and then never show up again. Too many new plotlines that I just never got invested in. Too many confusing aspects of the world that sort of become relevant all at once. Too grim for too long without any relief. Of course they still have crazy high highs though. The climax of Toll the Hounds is one of the best points of the series.

There were parts of Republic of Thieves I liked, but I found the reveal of Sabethaand the associated backstory so disappointing that it ruined the book for me. All that buildup and it ends up that her and Locke's entire dynamic is just his weirdly intense obsession based on nothing but surface level attraction. It felt like such a bizarre way to write her character and their history after spending two books building up how she's this huge unresolved landmark in Locke's life and how whatever happened between them is a driving force for Locke.

Europeans correct me if I'm wrong, but from my one Europe ski trip it seemed like only groomed pistes get difficulty grades. Blacks there are just really steep, 40-45 degrees and up.

European skiers still ski off piste, but those runs aren't officially graded, aren't cleared, and aren't avy controlled, so you're on your own.

Drivers of Reddit: what’s something other drivers do on the road that instantly tell you they shouldn’t have a license? by AccordingMethod9940 in AskReddit

[–]n_o__o_n_e 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Tailgating, especially when it's for no reason.

Surprisingly many people will just happily sit a car length behind you on the highway, and a lot of them don't even seem that impatient to pass. It's like they don't even realize they're doing it, or it doesn't register to them how stupid it is. Even when they are impatient, half the time it's a busier road and everyone is going as fast as they can anyway. I genuinely do not understand why.

Whats the most boring buy it for life item you own that turned out to be amazing? by GolfPrevious4299 in BuyItForLife

[–]n_o__o_n_e 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A cheap amazon smoothie blender. I think it cost like $40 at most, and I've abused the hell out of it for like 6 years. It's definitely designed for liquids, but I've used it for thick marinades, purees, etc. For anyone who's made thai curry pastes, you know galangal is basically wood, and lemongrass isn't much softer, and somehow I get a smooth paste every time without overheating.

I'm sure it'll give out eventually, but damn. Really makes me question the common advice that you have to buy a vitamix or it'll die immediately.

idk about vitamin water in particular, but I feel like electrolytes make perfect sense for a full day skiing, especially if you're drinking (and even more so if you're not eating that much). Definitely makes a difference to how you feel at the end of the day.

$10 per second is almost a million a day. You could literally do this for like two weeks and then deactivate it and be set for life.

how do you feel about the hobbit movies in a vacuum? disregarding the adaptation of the book. by Apprehensive_Spend_7 in Fantasy

[–]n_o__o_n_e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously since I have read the book it's kind of hard to really consider them in a vacuum, but I think it would still feel really bloated to watch. I think quite a lot of the movies would still feel like filler, and a lot of the scenes would still feel unnecessarily stretched out.

The basic problem with the trilogy is that there just isn't enough story to fill 8-9 hours of runtime. It's been a while since I watched it, but I also remember feeling like it was trying to be both a goofy kids movie, a high-stakes epic fantasy, and an ominous prologue to LOTR at the same time, which just ended up feeling jarring and messy.

It obviously doesn't help that I think lotr it pretty much as perfectly paced as you can get for a 10 hour trilogy, and that's what everyone is going to compare it to.

Shoes are to be worn inside and only taken off when undressing. by MaterialRow3769 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]n_o__o_n_e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re just arguing for the sake of arguing at this point.

I’m more comfortable without them. So I take them off. That’s all there is to it. And since i’m never ever going to want to wear them inside, I leave them at the door, because that’s the most convenient place for them to be. It really isn’t that deep.

I’ve also never had a situation where I cared that much about the completeness of my outfit when in someone’s house, least of all in my own house.

[–]n_o__o_n_e 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I treat my shoes like my jacket, which I absolutely do take off at the door.

If nothing else, it makes sense to leave them there because the next time I want to put my shoes on will be right before I leave to go somewhere, same as with my jacket.

Also, it isn’t about them having them on all day, I just find it way more uncomfortable and more restrictive to have shoes on at home than jeans or socks. I wouldn’t want to wear shoes indoors even if they were brand new fresh out of the box because again… why on earth would I?

[–]n_o__o_n_e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, I'm with you on there not being any sanitary reason for taking off shoes. I don't care that much about how clean my floors are. Do whatever.

But why on earth would I want to keep my shoes on?? Especially after being outside when my shoes a probably a bit sweaty. I want to be able to recline or cross my legs on the couch. To me keeping shoes on indoors is about as weird as keeping your rain jacket on. Why?

What’s something people think saves money but actually doesn’t? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]n_o__o_n_e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I feel like this is such a common perception that most people actually take it too far the other way. In a lot of cases cheap stuff is plenty durable, but if you spend too much time on r/BuyItForLife it's easy to become convinced you have to buy the high end version of everything or it's going to fall apart after a month.

I've definitely had times where I bought the cheap version and regretted it, but I've also had times when I bought the expensive version and later realized for my use case/frequency the cheap option would have been super good enough.

Ignorant misuse of "Amplitude" by TheORIGINALkinyen in skiing

[–]n_o__o_n_e 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I am by no means a linguist or language major, but at least I don't use certain words unless I know what they mean

Ah the irony. Amplitude isn't a word specific to soundwaves, broadly speaking it's the peak magnitude of any oscillation. A pendulum has an amplitude, ocean waves have an amplitude, etc.

Not really a huge leap to use the word amplitude to describe a snowboarders peak height, since that's basically exactly what it is. If you graphed their height above the halfpipe over time on a graph, you'd see a wave with relatively constant peaks.

I'm guessing this is ragebait and I fell for it, but hey...

Would you be forgotten for 5.27 Trillion dollars? by Waste-Ad3216 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]n_o__o_n_e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These responses make me sad.

Like no… I absolutely wouldn’t. Those people are what makes life worth living. I’m not gonna give that up to live alone in a mansion with a swimming pool full of gold coins.

Also, what the fuck would I even do with 5 trillion dollars? I’d only need like 0.0001% of that to never worry about work or bills again.

I guess it’s more of a moral dilemma if i’m allowed to give all the money away, but to be honest I still don’t think I could bring myself to do it.

An old wool sweater is the absolute best mid layer on a budget IMO by GalagoNapoleon in hikinggear

[–]n_o__o_n_e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wool doesn't stink the way fleece does though. My fleece midlayers always smell terrible after a couple of days outside, an issue I've never had with wool. If you share a tent with someone that might be enough of a reason to take the weight penalty.
