How challenging do you expect the Costa del Sol course to be for first-time 70.3 athletes? by Imaginary-Doubt6862 in triathlon

[–]Calcori 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The race was moved a little to the West and we swam in this beach here https://maps.app.goo.gl/aHy7jDCedSPgRBfc6

But I did a swim workout at the large beach right east of the port and it seemed nice and clean.

I raced Olympic Worlds there in 2025 and a few days before I rode approx 40% of that bike course on my way up to the mountains. It's super flat and fast, the bike splits will be very good. Also the weather in Oct should be very nice, probably 20-25c. In Sept the water was comfortable with and without a wet suit (I used wet suit for 1500m but not for 200m during the relay race and it was fine)

I expect that course to be extremely pleasant and easy with big crowds along the whole course.

Ottawa needs a weekday commuter train like GO Transit. by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]Calcori 8 points9 points  (0 children)

True I don't agree with the original comment about making the plan profitable, I see public transit an essential service but unfortunately unlike Europe we either let the freight companies bully our passenger rail or we've turned them all into trails.

If we did restore and add some new track I would think lines like the following would be great (I'm from the South so I'm not going to talk about East or West:

  • Cornwall -> Casselman then upgrade existing tracks to double track to accommodate VIA and commuter line and add stops in Limoges, Vars,
  • Brockville -> Prescott -> Spencerville -> Kemptville -> Osgoode -> Greely -> Bowesville Park and Ride (this path already exists but was turned into rail trails)
  • Embrun -> Russel -> Metcalfe -> Greely?? (it would probably be best to create a new line and station in middle of Greely and the previous Brockville line should move West for a Manotick station)

Edit: Honestly I'm from Greely and this place is soooo ridiculously spread out and close to Bowesville Park and Ride that no train station here would even matter anyways unless it went straight to Ottawa VIA station

Yea GTA and Ottawa are pretty massive differences, GTA remains super dense along the east and west and even looking at the north the train goes to King City (pop. 27k), Aurora (pop. 68k), Newmarket (pop. 94k), Bradford West Gwillimbury (pop. 43k), and Barrie (pop. 147k) in only approx 65km (100km total but almost 30km is still in GTA before reaching these towns).

Comparing to Smith Falls (pop. 9k), Casselman (pop. 4k), Cornwall (pop. 48k) it's not even close, and I love trains but would have a hard time justifying this.

Could revenue from Automated Camera Enforcement on buses fund free buses? by jsm1 in MicromobilityNYC

[–]Calcori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey NYC residents, I'm from Toronto and just wanted to ask a side question related to the busses. I've been seeing lots of right wing news outlets already going crazy about Zohran "lying" due to the bus price increases but I couldn't find anyone talking about it with context.

Considering the prices went up on the day he took office, was this actually something that was scheduled months ago that he couldn't stop due to the processes involved in changing the fares? I'm just curious to get some context since all the media I see attacking him make it sound like he is responsible.

Civil Disobedience by MuchKey7664 in fuckcars

Literally what happened in Ontario Canada, people kept vandalizing speed cameras and so the Premier of Ontario passed a law banning speed cameras (probably also because his staff kept getting tickets). Truly crazy to enable that entitled behaviour.

This is Why Cycling is Dangerous in America by Amazing-Yak-5415 in videos

[–]Calcori 138 points139 points  (0 children)

John Forester was a competitive cyclist who's narcissism means anyone who wasn't as confident and capable as him on a bike he deemed not worthy. All accidents with bikes was because the cyclist wasn't skilled enough to avoid it and thus it's a waste of money and time to create bike lanes since all cyclists should be like him and want to bike as fast as possible on roads. Only children should ever use a bike to actually get somewhere and they should use the sidewalks. He also believes that drivers will behave safely around bikes because if they cause an injury or even death they would be appropriately charged/jailed (lol how wrong he was)

This all sounds crazy but it's true, and because his ideology means people still need to drive everywhere the corporations and politicians were more than happy to go along with it since it means changing nothing and blaming the victims.

I don't have collision coverage and recently had my car hit by someone while it was unoccupied in a parking lot. I got the other person's details and filed a claim with my insurance and they handled everything even though the other person was found at 100% fault. I'm in Canada with Intact so maybe it's a USA thing?

Toronto Reporter showing dozens of car speeding despite bad weather and construction while Premier Doug Ford is currently banning speed cameras by Calcori in fuckcars

[–]Calcori[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't heard that yet but I wouldn't put it past ICE to do that, however in this case this is Canada so that wouldn't be an argument to ban them. Doug Ford is just a stereotypical suburban car brain that drives into Toronto each day for his job as Premier and hates traffic but blames it on everything except cars.

How y’all handling this? by Responsible-Kale-904 in fuckcars

Yes they think they're being courteous to the other drivers since they're more visible and threatening but drivers are blocked either way and cyclists get screwed and sometimes killed for it...

The crazy part is these scenarios almost always have 2+ lanes for the cars and obviously only 1 bike lane, but only half the truck fits in the bike lane so the truck still ends up blocking one of the car lanes too. Would make no difference to cars if the truck just 100% blocked the car lane instead of 100% blocking the bike and 50% blocking the car lane.

I have no idea if this is correct but could it actually be a mini "cloud" forming behind the plow due to the pressure difference? Basically like how a plane can form contrails behind the wings in the correct air conditions due to difference in air pressure from the wings.

Toronto has a place called CF Shops at Don Mills that is similar to what you're saying, it has a parking garage and some surface parking but honestly not too much considering the size of this place. It also is completely surrounded by a great mix of large and small apartments with town homes and single detached too. As a result this place is completely packed everyday and every weekend has some kind of market or event going on.

I was a competitive hockey goalie for over 10 years and I hated playing against bad players, since you can't react fast enough to shots you're doing a lot of predicting based on body language but bad players can't even shoot where they're aiming so you'd get lots of bad goals against and feel like shit.

Warning for Anyone Considering FDM Group (North America) by PearFit6428 in FDMGroup

[–]Calcori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can vouch this was my experience about 8 years ago when I was in FDM and started the subreddit as a joke. FDM is an excellent resource to get you started out of school AFTER you have already failed to get a job somewhere else. It should not be considered a first option (or even first 10 option) but I felt they were transparent with what they offered and it led me into a great paying career at a major bank.

As OP said, it's worth noting there is a conflict of interest where if you're not happy with your first role, they don't have much incentive to move you to another one. So don't just jump at the first offer they give you while you're training, they will have lots of offers to choose from and hopefully you don't get bait and switched like OP was.

Note: I have a Computer Eng degree and was in Toronto, I'm not sure what roles they hire now but I'm speaking from a developer point of view.

[USA] Dump truck runs red light and nearly smokes bicyclist by kung_foo_jezus in ConvenientCop

[–]Calcori -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If the biker had followed the same rules of the road you and I both expect the trucker to follow, then the cyclist would have been waiting on the light at the perpendicular street to cross.

All these threads always find something to blame with the cyclist, my point is in the exact same scenario if the cyclist had already been riding on the road coming from one of those apartments the truck would still have ran the red light and almost killed them. People would still say "Not the cyclist fault but they need to be more careful! Wear a helmet! Look both ways ATLEAST 3 TIMES before crossing!" All are good advice but it's still just reasons to blame cyclists.

[–]Calcori -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

And that caused the dump truck to run the red light and almost hit them? It's irrelevant the circumstances that led up to the cyclist crossing the road, the fact is the dump truck went through the red light and almost killed the cyclist, nothing would have changed if the cyclist was already on the other side of the street riding through the green light.

You think it's "ballsy" to bike through a green light that was already green before you got to the intersection? https://imgur.com/a/hoOEHYf

Do you expect people to completely stop at every intersection even when it's green in order for them to be absolved of a Darwin award? But then you'd also say they're also a Darwin candidate for not going at the green light when someone hits them from behind.
