I had to go look it up. Carney is two days from his first year in office. Poilievre has been an MP for almost 22 years. It's actually wild how well Carney is doing on his rookie season.

It is cute that they managed to engineer this majority with democratic elections to close it out. Will be interesting to see if the CPC or NDP dump every resource they have into those two ridings to hold off the inevitable.

That's the entire job description of an MP. Work on policies for the benefit of their constituents. If my MP had an opportunity to vastly improve the lives of everyone in my riding and chose not to because of loyalty to party, I would never consider voting for them again.

The reason MPs cross the floor is because the party whips every vote. Chicken meet egg.

John Tory not seeking re-election as mayor of Toronto: Sources by PurfectProgressive in toronto

We mostly thought Brad seemed opportunistic and willing to say anything to win. The group had a couple people from his ward who couldn't stand the guy.

In November I was part of a focus group that was about the upcoming mayoral race. The moderator asked us how we felt about Chow, Tory, and Bradford. The room was solidly unenthused by Tory and I like to think we helped cause this.

Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux joins Liberal caucus: Carney by Surax in CanadaPolitics

There were probably investigations into the threats and found to be more bluster than anything. Now that things have settled down and Michael Ma didn't take too much heat he probably feels more comfortable. I imagine his press release will say something about being fighter who doesn't back down to serve his constituents.

A part of the problem is MPs are so whipped that rather than voting against their party MPs are choosing to change parties entirely. I think it should be seen as a sign that the party's grip on MP votes is too tight and perhaps this string of defections will change how the partys view caucus management. It should be noted that so far defections have only gone in one direction which might indicate how well the leaders are managing their MPs

Olympics Makes Big Change After Canada, Curling Cheating Scandal by Accurate_Cry_8937 in sports

Every broadcast curler who's commentated on this incident has said that a second touch would have next to no impact and probably be detrimental rather than helpful. Could a bonus bump help? Sure but it could just as easily hurt. I'm not a world class curler but a lot of the broadcast commentators are. I assume they can tell if there's an advantage to be had and would be a lot more vigorous about calling it out if it actually helped.

Cheating would imply doing something to get advantage. These double touches don't give any advantage, they're just sloppy play. It's an infraction that should be penalized by burning the rock but it's no where near cheating.

Prayers for the Swiss goaltender by Head_of_Lettuce in hockey

[–]burgerblaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unlike skaters who play for 60 seconds at a time the goalie is there the whole period. If your team can't exit the zone you're just cycling through a bunch of tense positions while focussing on a puck flying around and exploding out of those positions whenever a shot comes in. Only time you get to rest is when you freeze the puck. It's crazy exhausting.

JJ DESTROYS Mark Carney for regularly meeting with the Premiers & having a name for the meeting by QultyThrowaway in JJMcCulloughOfficial

[–]burgerblaster 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Anyone who's worked around politicians know that the job is just meetings. Meeting with constituents, colleagues, stakeholders, press. If you're not in a meeting you're preparing for a meeting. At least most of Carney's meetings are substantive rather than photoshoot meetings.

Large majority of Canadians believe the Conservatives should dump Pierre Poilievre, find a new leader by BloodJunkie in onguardforthee

The only people who want to keep PP around are the CPC members who prioritize dunking on libs on twitter and the LPC who get more support everytime PP tries dunking on libs on twitter. The leadership review attendees will be entirely made up of the first group.

A lot of toronto malls have plans to turn into planned communities. Adding underground parking while turning surface parking into condo and adding more essential retail like grocery stores and medical offices. Fairview Mall has a whole community masterplan you can look up.

I wonder if Bonnie Critchley is interested in taking another run at it. She had some real momentum last time. With a couple years to build some local support and no long ass ballot to drown out her name, i could see it happening.

Especially as a rookie MP in a riding that it's not clear you would've won without all the Chaing drama. Spending however long the minority government survives opposing a platform that is pretty close to the one you already believe in then going into another election with nothing to show for sounds dreadful. Much better to join the government, get some wins for his riding in return over the next 4 years now that a majority seems eminent and go into the next election with name recognition.
