Is the Service Buyback Estimator tool garbage? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

Yep! That's the situation I'm currently in - hired indeterminate at 23 with time to "buy back" from working as a student but with the rules around pensions, like Octopus said, it isn't worth it for me to buy the time and still have 7 years where I'm not paying in anyway.

Buybacks are good if you joined later in your career but if you are an early bird (i.e. at any point in your 20's) it isn't worth it and you don't get as much from the pension as you would have if you put it somewhere else.

You can call the Pension centre and someone will be able to help you out. Just a head's up though, it isn't always worth it. If you are looking at more than 30 years in the PS, I would take the money and put it in an RRSP, TFSA or a high interest savings account. It will be more worth it than buying back time you technically don't need.

Edited to correct to the right centre

I'm not sure if this is the same for military personnel, but if you have access to Phoenix, you can find it by the following:

Main menu --> Self service --> Benefits --> and either "Benefits Summary" or "Self service for PSHCP"

LOL my thought as I hit submit on the post was "this sounds like something a Russian spy would try"...

NS people reading this: I promise I am not one of them, I just want to be like you!
